Aarrghh, Vista!

Everywhere I've looked for a new laptop, they ALL come with Vista. Finally today I purchased one. SO, before I delve into the great unknown (and heretofore dreaded) Vista and OOTP8, can anyone give any pointers on what pitfalls to avoid or what precautions to take??? Secrets to installation?? Possible crashes to avoid??? I've never so much as gazed at a Vista screen.

ANY help is truly appreciated. I never really learned XP, now it's Vista.

Thanks again for any replies.

Run as admin the first time you open OOTP8, that's about the only thing that really changed between Vista and XP that I can think of.

FWIW, I've had zero problems running OOTP8 (or the OOTP9 beta) on Vista.

IMO, people totally overexaggerate the issues with Vista. Yeah, you want a good amount of memory, but while 2 would be nice I only have 1GB and it's alright. Yeah, you'll probably want to turn off UAC, but if you can resist then it probably is best to leave it on. Yeah, you need to run things as admin first sometimes, but once you know to try that you're good. Issues with programs not working with Vista are pretty non-existent now and even when Vista first came out I only had 1 program not work with it. And getting used to OOTP8 from OOTP6 takes a whole lot longer than getting used to Vista from XP. I quite like Vista, you just need a modern computer to run it.

Turn off the UAC and the associated notifications that go with it and Vista will suddenly look better to you. Still way ugly, of course, but better.

Also, to make folders more familiar and accessible, you might want to do this. Files look like this on Vista. But they can be changed to folders by clicking on views...

Thanks everybody. All of this is very helpful. Well, most of this is very helpful. Ok so a good part of them is very helpful. I'm not gonna format the drive and load linux, and maybe those posts from that baby eating dude aren't likely to be followed, but everything else is a big help.

Thanks again.

I recently upgraded to Vista.

Since the upgrade OOTP8 has not crashed once. On XP i'd get a "This program has to be closed" type of errror a few times a week.

I'd say Vista is an improvement.

Well, I've been experimenting some tonight and haven't yet figured out how to run as admin, but I suspect I will and will heed your advice. Thanks.

Thanks guys. Now do you LEAVE it off at all times?? Just wondering about the security thing. I don't do a lot of surfing, don't do a lot of downloads, so I'm thinking I'm ok with leaving it off.

Just checked and mine has 3GB. Is this good, or at least sufficient??

These are refreshing. Feeling better about Vista. A little. Thanks for into. Anything new is hard, and its even harder with age. You know, teach an old dog new tricks thing.

Thank you ALL very much for replying. Got a laugh out the ones meant to draw one, and that helped too. Thanks again.

Careful, don't drop that thing. If its running XP, its precious. Check any store if you don't believe me. And you're right, never trust a baby eating dude.

once I chose run OOTP as admin I have had zero-OOTP-Vista issues.

and I do agree much of the ballyhoo about Vista is overrated. Yes, it hangs some times and has some compatibility issues - but so does XP.

I think there is some similaritlies between the XP-Vista conversion to the OOTP 6.5-SI Modeled Versions.

The difference is the SI Modeled Versions of OOTP actually have some great advantages over 6.5. I have been running Vista for a year now and outside of a few very minor things I don't see any advantages over XP and this includes Vista SP1.

I only stay with Vista because of my need to use it everyday in order to properly support it.

One final not if you really wanted an XP laptop Dell is selling them through next thursday - final day for any XP throguh Dell is 6/18

I turned the UAC off sometime in my first 24 hours of use of Vista and haven't bothered turning it back on. Vista really is pretty much the same as XP aside from taking more resources and a slightly different way of organizing a few folders.
