Ball Flight
Long time fan...still on the fence for OOTP9.
Does the ball flight location (say 6D) accurately reflected by the PBP and not just eye candy. " Keith Hernadez hits a hot grounder up the middle (6D), it's into...NO...Ozzie Smith makes a great stop behind second base and his throw to first nips Hernandez for the third out of the inning." Is it more likely that only a SS with great range would make the above play at 6D? Are fielding ranges and arm strengths modeled well by ball location and the PBP? TXS |

I have a saved image of the default location settings, but I don't have the jump drive its on with me and my computer won't cooperate to make a new one right now. 6D should be just on the grass past the shortstop from what I can recall.

Here's the default one that you made available to me in a previous thread, and my own that I am currently using...

Guys...Thanks a lot !
I am aware of the location grid system from OOTP 7. My question was poorly asked. I'll try again. When the ball flight shows a ground ball deep in the hole say to the SS location (6D): 1. Does the PBP reflect/describe the in-play location accurately in some fashion? 2. In this case with a ball deep in the hole, does the sim take into account accurately the SS's range, arm in order to make this play? 3. Or is this just merely eye candy? I've always played out all my team's games over the years. I've fond memories of my dad and I listening to Bob Prince call the Pirate games on KDKA radio ( "All the Buccos need is a bloop and a blast!"). Hence my interest in ball flight and PBP from the days of radio and my youth. I am glad sound has made a comeback! Ball park ambience from the dark ages of radio broadcasting.

I Believe it determines the play, including the fielders range and arm, and the location the ball is hit to, and the animation is just a visual recreation of where the ball was hit after the play determination.
Maybe someone will verify this? |

1. Yes. The ball-flight animation is just a "movie" of what the game has already determined to have happened, just as the PbP is.
2. The game has always done this. This hasn't changed just because we now see a ball moving across the ballpark picture. 3. And it's eye candy, too.

My gripe is when these two things don't match up. For example, when the PbP talks about the player scaling the wall, and the ball is shown shy of the warning track.
I know the animiation can be turned off, but I wish this feature could be completely deactivated.

Ball flight is a new feature. The development team just needs a bit of time to weed out some of the bugs. My hope is that connecting the PBP to ball flight is just the foundation for some very exciting PBP things to come in the future. I'm willing to cut them a little slack while they get the ball rolling.

It still has a long way to go for people like me. I want things done to almost perfection. But it is a fair beginning. In fact, most people are glad it is in the game. Same can be said of the sound. I'm sure both will be worked on year by year and one day we will have good animation and good sound in the game. I like that Markus usually gives us the option to disable certain features. That is much preferred to being forced to use them. I don't plan to use either one of the new features until they are better perfected. But a lot of gamers will use them and be happy with them. Can animation be turned off completely, just like with sound? Now when I disable animation the ball still shows up on the field. That would be greta accept I've been playing in full screen where the field is larger and there is no way to line up the ball flight indicators correctly (without a lot of trial and error) using the editor on different screen resolutions. Thats why I'd rather disable the ball flight completely.

Now I understand your question - Even with animation off, the final location of the ball shows after the PBP is done. I hadn't noticed it before - but it is very annoying when it is showing ground balls ending up in the upper deck.
