What Is Your Preferred "Genre" In OOTP?

Someone suggested it...

I've never tried to post a poll in this particular forum before, so here goes...

Of the major categories of OOTP gaming, which do you prefer most?

My favorite is fictional, but a close second is historical MLB. I like starting in either 1946 or 1969. They're both the beginning of a new era in the game, and they are my Dad's and my birth years.

For solo play, I like middle of the 21st Century MLB. I have been starting in 2020 on some of my test runs.

Fictional, online. It's the only way to go.

Tough question to answer, as I think all of those genres have been my favorites at one point. I guess my current solo play is historical in the 60's, so I answered straight historical.

The game probably sets itself up for straight fictional the best though.

Im the current only 'other'

I like fictional leagues/teams no bigger than 16 teams, but using players from the 82/84 era to start.

I used to play "Statis Pro' Baseball Board game from same era and know the players inside out, so liek suing them. Although I ususally add myself and my kids as well!

I voted "other" but perhaps misunderstood your options. I like to start out with a real MLB roster but let the game create fictional draftees going forward.

Fictional solo play, all the way. The energy I've devoted to creating my fictional universe, what with logos, stadiums, and schedule, is considerable.

OOTP still can't handle my ideal universe, however. Sim speeds are still to slow to handle a 48-team major league with supporting minors and feeders. It would take too much time to sim out the 100 year history I always do before taking over a team...

I voted "other" because...

I use OOTP for two leagues with no firm preference of one over the other.

The first is an historical league. I usually start it in 1920 (since I don't care much for the deadball game and don't know much about many of the players). This is a sim only league so I go through the seasons pretty quickly and usually end around 1990. Since I like to have some variation, I'll use different options when starting the league: sometimes I turn on free agency from day 1, sometimes use recalc, sometimes assign players to their historical teams. Currently, this league this time is using free agency from day 1, recalc and drafting the rookies.

The second league is the fictional Vegas league (motto: "Its Sinatra's league. You just play in it"). Its large and complex with affiliated minors, independent leagues in the UK, France and Italy that at least attempt to create a different kind of player and at least appear play a different kind of baseball... fewer HR, more "deadball" type, or all-hit, no defense or high average singles hitters etc... (I'm still "tuning" this part). There are also 3 independent leagues in the US. All of the independent leagues have different operating rules (trade deadlines, free agency, etc) and can interact with the Vegas league. The main twist here is that for the main Vegas league, the annual "winner" is the team with the greatest dollar profit. At the end of 5 seasons, the team with the lowest total profit (after a slight modifier for any winning of the division & playoffs... call it "prestige points") gets "imploded". Ballpark capacity (and therefore income possibility) is set considering the square footage of casino space, hotel rooms and other income generating items a particular casino has (or had) in real life. That creates a few economic powerhouses, but if they spend too much on free agents etc, then the bottom line profit can take a hit just the same.

100% fictional for me, but ideally set in the past. '46 seems like a good start point. But I also like rockin' the 70s, too. Pretty much any time period that's post WWII and pre-90s will make me happy.

I also have a strong preference for small leagues (12-16 teams) with limited (or zero) minor leagues. My brain just isn't into tracking a full slate of minors on top of focusing on the bigs - it's too much work for my fun time. And don't even suggest feeder leagues for me

Still, I'm very glad those options are there for folks who are so inclined. And who knows? Maybe I'll give 'em a shot next time around.

I did other because I am at about 50/50 for fictional and real. I use to play with just all real rosters but I have just finished a 55 year fictional league so i'm starting to like that.

I put other because, I started playing real MLB for a long while until it ran into just fictional players, then I liked fictional. I then joined a historical and liked that. So I'm in 4 leagues, real MLB that has some fictional, 2 fictional and 1 historical. I like them all, but since I love the history of baseball historical gets the slight edge.

I said other. It all depends on how tired I am or the mood I'm in. I have one fictional league and one real league.

If I feel like getting deep and doing a lot of thinking, I go with my fictional league. If I feel a less demanding game, ie, no GM stuff, I go with the historical replay.

I've switched over the years from current MLB to historical MLB. I'll still fire up a current MLB league for some light gaming, but my serious leagues are historical (or a historical/fictional mix).

Plus, of course, my online league his historical.

I found that I like fictional players better than real ones.

I have trouble accepting great players doing poorly.

Tom Seaver was 7-22 with a 5.00 ERA in one of my early leagues.

Joe DiMaggio hit .257.

I then tried fictionals and have no expectations. I can't be disappointed.

I say this, although my All-Time All-Star Association composed of the 16 original franchises with each team's roster composed of its 25 best players in history, plus great Negro and Japanese stars. was really great to play. I disabled the development and for the most part the league played out pretty well. Although there were still aberrations. The game would still change ratings once a year for some players and I would have to put them back to the original form. It was a pain, but worth it. This was in OOTPB 6.51.

I played 11 years and did a dynasty report, but I lost my hard drive and stupidly had no backup.

I learned my lesson. I now back up in three places after each day of play.

I may restart that All-Time League one of these days.

I like historical replay, with fictional players mixed in. Ficstorical I guess you could call it. I like to resim MLB history with these wild card fictional players thrown in. I think Pure fictional would rank #2 and currant rosters as #3 for me. I also enjoy all-star leagues as well, with fictional players thrown in of course.

Fictional is the only way to play! What I am doing is playing historical fictional (real MLB teams, historical players) beginning at the dawn of baseball around mid to early 1800's. I will sim all the way to the modern era before eventually taking over a team. It's fun to watch records get set and then broken.

Fictional players always. I used to use MLB teams. I've started playing out my games, so I switched to a 16 team league with a 34 game schedule. I'd take two months to play out a 162 game schedule, 34 games will still take me almost two weeks though
