OOTP Price Make Sense???

I've heard so much about 6.5 on these forums that I thought I might go ahead and purchase it and dabble around a bit. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that OOTP8 is selling for basically $20 ($19.99), while the older version, 6.5 is basically selling for $30 ($19.99+$9.99 as you must purchase 6 and 6.5).

Does this make sense? Are there any coupon codes for owners of 2007, 8, and 9?

I do plan on buying the TB2.5 as well, since I hadn't upgraded that yet, but I thought I'd get both in one transaction, so I'll wait until I get some clarification on those prices. I guess I thought the older version would/should be cheaper.

For some reason, the price of OOTP 6 has not changed in over 3 years. It used to be that the version from 2 years previous became free when a new version came out (version 5 became free with the release of 2006, v4 was free with v6, v3 became free with v5, v2 became free with v4).

Version 6.5 should be a free release by now. I am very unhappy that it is not. I think that a very poor decision has been made.

I don't know. Given the raucous banter over the two interfaces, maybe that'd be considered akin to shipping guns to the rebels?

Exactly. OOTP6.5 was so good and preferred by some that maybe they just figure they can still make some money off of it. Next to no one would have bought OOTP4 instead of OOTP6, but with how much some people love OOTP6.5 some might just be convinced to buy it. I don't mind them keeping it pay too much because it gives online leagues a little more reason to upgrade. It's just a shame that it's still 30 with the expansion.

Honestly, OFG, there isn't much point in going back to OOTP6.5 over OOTP9. Over OOTP2006, I'd say definitely. Over OOTP2007/OOTP8, I'd say maybe, but not especially. OOTP9 has finally surpassed OOTP6.5, IMO.

It's so many versions back that it should have been released as freeware a long time ago.

I don't remember each version becoming free once it was two versions old. I believe that was only done when OOTP5 become free sometime after the 2006 launch. I specifically remember a similar discussion to this when OOTP3 was still for sale when OOTP6 came out.
At one point - maybe during OOTP5 or OOTP6 version 2 was release as freeware simply from a point of nostalgia.

OFG, if it is simply curiosity you have toward v6, you may check out the demo.

Not sure if you can patch the demo to get it to v6.5, but it is worth the try. And I echo Kelric's comments. OOTP9 has far surpassed v6.5 and there is no reason to go backwards.

IMO, as long as Markus continues to support league conversions from 6.5 to the latest version, he should still be able to charge for 6.5.

Once Markus finally decides to leave 6.5 in the dust (which means no longer supporting league conversions to the new version) then yes, it should be made free.

Regardless of what I or you might think, I find it kind of out of place to tell someone who makes their living off of this game to release prior versions for free "just because others have done so"

Big Diff

It makes sense to me that it isn't free, because I think it is a different game. There are obvious similarities between 6.5 and OOTP9 but 6.5 is different enough to count as a different game for me, and it's not just the interface. Other things like the records and the relation of the Almanac to the league history, the simplified finances, the far easier and more reliable schedule maker, simplified roster movement, etc. mark it as a different game for me. Oddly, I sometimes think of OOTP9 as a simulation of 6.5, instead of another game in the same series.

Yep, it was just curiosity, as my arrival came with 2007, and I've purchased 2007, 8, and 9, and was just curious as to its past. And I'm not going to let curiosity kill the cat, or in this case the 30 bucks , so, I'll pass.

I do find it odd that an older version would cost more than a newer one though.

I agree that 6.5 is pretty much a different game and would cater to a fan that wants a quick baseball sim without the hulking database of the modern version. $30 is way too much though. I can see charging $10.
