Minor League Modifiers Project

Minor league stats in OOTP are usually not accurate with real life. Running a 24 team league with 5 levels of minors I found that pitching seems to dominate. I use 20-80 or 2-8 ratings usually, and prefer to use stats for analyzing players. The purpose of this project is to find find league total modifiers that result in 'accurate' minor league stats.

Background: The league totals in ootp are effected by 3 factors:
1) Distribution and level of talent in the league.
2) League total modifiers
3) Ballpark factors.

Thus, the same modifiers won't work for all league structures. For a longer explanation see http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/board/ootp-9-general-discussions/169727-league-totals-modifiers.html.

I collected historical league totals from 1992-2008 for each of the official minor leagues of the mlb from Minor League Baseball Statistics and History - Baseball-Reference.com. Attached is the spreadsheet I used to calculate the averages over this period, historical summary, and my modifiers.

I'm fairly happy with the results. Triples and stolen bases seem to fluctuate a bit, but the main stats hits/doubles/hr/so/bb reached my "target" values. I simmed with a 28 team/1 division league. Perfectly balanced schedule so each team plays the other 6 times.

These settings should work for any league with 5 levels of minors and/or the same influx of talent. I use a 20 round draft and generate players for 21 rounds. 10% foreign players and hidden players ON.

Interesting. Thank you for taking the time to research this. While my own league's settings are a little different, I will be monitoring your work with interest. One question for you: what General Strategic Tendencies are you using for your ideal AAA settings?

Same strategy as ML level, but all minors have the DH rule. I increase SB attempt and success %.

USE OF RELIEVERS: Very Often
USE OF CLOSERS: Very Often
PITCHER ENDURANCE: Low
TYPICAL STARTING ROTATION SIZE: 5 Man Rotation
PINCH HIT FOR PITCHERS: Often
PINCH HIT FOR POSITION PLAYERS: Rarely
DEFENSIVE SUBSTITUTIONS: Normal
STEALING BASES: Normal
HIT & RUN: Rarely
BUNTING: Rarely

I had looked at this briefly before and came to the conclusion that OOTP was doing alright in regards to minors numbers, but I am interested in this project as well --- Just one question -- Where did you get your International League data? The totals above and the annual totals in the spreadsheet do not match baseball-reference.

International is corrected. I also got all data from baseball-ref

Just a quick question - with SB Succ at 1.000 - you're saying that every attempt is a success????

"1.000" is OOTP's default value for all league totals, so the fact that he's using that for SB Success means that runners will steal successfully at OOTP's default rate.

you might want to check out this minors sight too...

SABR Minor Leagues Database - Search

that is for 1980, but you can look it up by year. They have a lot of info. Of course it is a little harder to navigate but good stuff.

Okay, that's what I thought. Just making sure.

Stolen bases and triples seem to have a high variance from year to year (in league totals). 2B, HR, BB, K, ERA, and AVG are all pretty accurate with these settings. Been using them for a few seasons and it works well. Minor league stats still aren't absolute indicators, but in context I find them more useful now.

Since its Thanksgiving and all, I figured I'd drop in here and say a quick "thank you" for these modifiers. I just updated my league setup with these numbers and will be simming a season this weekend. Will let ya know what I come up with. Historically my minors have been VERY pitching dominate, so I'm hoping this will fix some of that. thanks!

This is an interesting read, has anyone came up with the numbers to use in OOTP to get the minor league numbers more closely resemble their real life counterparts?

My numbers are pretty close. I took rough averages of real data. You could start with my numbers and tinker to get exact numbers (I've attached historical data).

Isura, I expect you aren't really qualified to give a definitive answer to this, but do you have an idea whether these numbers will work for 'short' minors (only one or two levels), or for leagues where the top level is AA or AAA?

My Oriental universe has one International level league (Nippon) that has two levels of minors (AAA and AA), one International with no minors (Korea), one AAA level league (Taiwan) with one level of minors (AA), and one AA level league (China). Should I be adopting your modifiers for my non-International leagues?

Isura, maybe I missed it, but I only saw modifiers listed in the first post and in post #7, and those were listed as ficitional leagues. I was hoping to find a break down for each real minor league to possibly recreate potentially lifelike stats?

I think he was looking for modifiers for each individual minor league since the Texas League generally has different stats than the Eastern League. What Isura has are generalized modifiers for Double A.
