How important is computer's RAM for OOTP?

I currently have 1GB of RAM, it seems. (and can post more info, if it's relevant)

I found a decent deal online that would allow me to upgrade to a total 4GB . . . for $10 after rebate . . .

Since OOTP is easily the most memory intense thing I run on my laptop here, would I be likely to see much upgrade in OOTP's performance?

thanks

With the addition of 3 gigs of RAM I would think that your laptop would move like lightning,as long as you have a processor that can keep up.

OOTP is pretty heavy in RAM usage, but it also has to do with the scope of what you're doing. The more players and years in your league, the more RAM intensive.

According to one of the threads down in the Mods>Rosters part of the forum, having more than 1 Gb is essential if you play historicals with full import of history (and more so if you use a custom database). Otherwise the game is supposed to 'hang' upon loading… and maybe startup?

I have 4 gig and it works relatively fast.

Of course it is never as fast as I want it to be, which is instantaneous.

My solo league is 69 years in and seems to run fine. I delete boxscores, gamelogs and messages every year after I backup the league.

Important note, after deleting the messages, delete the messages.dat file to avoid having blank messages when you open the league.

I also move the Almanac folder to my external HDD with the league backups.

Warning; back up your league before doing this.

There is a thread somewhere that 1998 Yankees posted a couple of bat files that help to automate this. I can't find it via search.

Edit. That's with 2gig Ram and Vista.

More than 2gig of ram for Windows XP is overkill, but it does not hurt. You will eventually have to upgrade to Vista or 7, so the memory is not wasted.

XP just does not take advantage of the 2 extra gig the way it should.

Before you buy 4GB of RAM, keep in mind that your laptop may not be upgradeable to that much. Maybe the most you can put in is 2GB like mine.
