Offering extensions during Free Agency

My online league is in the middle of free agency, and the league date is 12/15/2016. 2017 arbitration has already been awarded to players. I have a few guys on my roster whose contracts will expire at the end of the 2017 season.

Two are in their last arbitration years, and the other is an older player for which 2017 is the last year of his contract. When I try to offer an extension, OOTP lists 2017 as the first year of the contract offer. If a player signs an extension with this, is it really going to overwrite his 2017 salary, or is this just a cosmetic bug, and contract will really start in 2018?

Thanks in advance for any help with this.
