Hall of Fame or not?
As I mentioned in another thread, I just lost Wally Berger to a CEI.
His numbers don't meet the OOTP Hall of Fame requirements but I'm thinking I might put him in. Let me know if I should or not. Over 10 seasons, he hit .317 with 1481 Hits, 274HRs and 982RBIs. He also won 4MVPs, 4 Gold Gloves, played in 4 World Series with 3 different teams, winning 2 with 2 different teams, one in the American League, one in the National. When he went down on July 30,1938, he was having one of his best seasons ever, hitting .349 with 25HR and 88RBI. Cut down in his prime. So let me know, do I induct or not? |

Based on the overall stats I would say no. BUT - he was one of the best players in your league for most of his career - SO - I may make a provision for him to be included in the HOF.
If it were my league I would not put him in but that is only because I feel if this player is elected what would you do with players that played 1 or 2 years longer and have similar stats but in a longer career. You need to cutoff somewhere. Lowering the bar to allow this player would require you to let others in that may not be good choices....

I'd vote "yes" if your league is average in most ways. He was a superstar for many years and his numbers were great, for the amount of time he played; and that amount of time wasn't too short.

After some consideration,I'd put him in.IMO,the Hall Of Fame should not just be about longevity,it should be about consistent greatness. If a guy plays for 7 seasons, and is brilliant in all of them, then to me he's in.

Thanks for the input. I'm leaning toward inducting him.
To add a little more perpective to it, at the time of the injury, he was 6th on the all time HR list, led the league in HR 4 times and had the sixth highest single season HR total with 52 behind only Joe DiMaggio with 62 and 4 Babe Ruth seasons. 552.4 career VORP over 8 1/2 seasons (I counted wrong before) Any other input is appreciated. Thanks |

Let's put it this way. Craig Biggio will probably make it to the Hall of Fame even though he was never truly among the best players in the league in any given year. Your guy was apparently the best player in the league 4 times and must have had some other good seasons as well. Do you want to reward just longevity or impact on the game?
