Worst player ratings ever?

Check out the ratings of this dog! How did he get half a star? Quite the leader though.

Wasn't this guy a Designated Runner for the Oakland A's back in the Charlie Finley era?

Yeah he does have some okay wheels. i like how he is a "pull hitter" under type of hitter. He has a contact rating of one with no potential improvement. The type of hitter field should be blank or to be determined. Can you get a zero for a rating?

The bigger problem is that the game creates these clowns.

The game can create several of these kinds of players.

But he's a born leader.

I created a test league and pulled an entire draft class. Here is the average rating of a 17 year-old hitter:

The average 17 yo ratings are:

Contact: 5.98
Gap: 8.48
Eye: 4.41
AvK: 4.82
Power: 3.41
BABIP: 9.01

302 Prospects

It's not the ratings that I have an issue with. It's the potential.

Really, you should be worried about both, IMHO.

Well, I am. Don't get me wrong.

But it's just the fact that not only does this guy not have any talent, he has zero hope of EVER getting better. At least if his potentials were in the 40's, he'd be a decent minor leaguer.

Not true. There is certainly a chance that his talents will get a big bump. It happens. It makes no real sense, as it's designed, but it does happen. There are many design flaws around in player creation, IMO, the biggest of which is that current ratings and potential ratings are not really correlated particularly well.

That said, I hear of guys who automatically cut players with ratings like this. Fine if they need to space in their organization, but they're just dropping a raffle ticket that will pay off every now and again.

Without doing some math or additional study I would guess this guy has about a 4-5% chance of playing in the majors.

In fact, I'm willing to guarantee his talents will go up in the next year or two. How far, I don't know. But it's nearly certain they will go up.

Doing a quick eyeball scan of my dev charts, I'll modify my projections to about 2% that this guy will ever be able to play in the majors. He'll still almost certainly see some progression of talent, though he may just as well lose his gains as keep them.

You're right, sometimes it's okay to take a flier on guys like this ONLY IF they have a strong Work Ethic and/or Intelligence rating.

I know I certainly mine the FA pool after our draft each year just to find guys that are more likely to bump up, but I've never taken a chance on someone THIS bad.
