Best World Series ever?
Ok, so first a little playoff background information. My team, the Reds, had won a 16 inning marathon in St.Louis to defeat and sweep the Cardinals, and go to the 2016 World Series undefeated. They would face another undefeated team, the Rays.
In game 1, Reds ace Clarence Grant allowed only two runs in 8 innings, but Rays starter Jesus Padilla matched every pitch and more, allowing only 1 run in eight innings. The Reds struck first with a solo shot by Juan Francisco in the fifth, but Tampa’s Bill Halfyard singled in a run in the 6th, and sac filed in a run in the 8th, and Cincinnati went in to the bottom of the ninth trailing 2 – 1. Tampa closer Brian Wilson, however, allowed Freddy Gomez to hit a solo home run leading off the ninth to tie things up. The Rays rallied off Adam Reifer in the top of the 10th with 2 runs, one earned, as a wild pitch with the bases loaded, and then a sac fly gave the rays a 4 -2 lead. Brian Wilson again gave up a home run to start the bottom of the 10th, Juan Fransisco’s second home run and third hit of the night. The rays then brought in Nate West, who, after getting two outs, walked the bases loaded. He then struck out Terry Brabender to seal the win for the Rays. It was a disappointing loss for the Reds, as the offence that carried them to the World Series all but disappeared, with the exception of Freddy Gomez who had two hits, and of course Juan Francisco who had three hits, including the two home runs. In game 2, The Reds stuck first again, as Julio Morban tripled in a run, and Devaris Gordon hit a sac fly, giving the Reds a 2 – 0 lead after one. Reds starter Anthony Thompson was not sharp, giving up seven runs, six earned in three innings, and the relievers allowed five more Rays to score. Nate West of the Rays allowed a solo shot by Julio Morban to open the bottom of the 8th, and proceeded to walk the bases loaded for the second straight night, this time with no outs. Ralph Morrissey and Jay Bruce both hit run scoring groundouts, but that was all the reds could do, as they lost the game 12 -5. Tampa was propelled by four home runs, big offensive nights by Bill Halfyard, and Chris Young, and a solid start (6ip 2 er) by Josh Johnson. The Reds again could not get any offence going, as Julio Morban was the only Red with multiple hits. In game 3, Tampa took a 2 -0 lead early with a RBI single by Chris Young in the second and a RBI single by Tim Owens in the fourth. The Reds rallied in the top of the 5th as, with one out, Devaris Gordon singled, Freddy Gomez doubled, Terry Brabender doubled both of them in, and Ralph Morrissey hit the third straight reds double, bringing in Brabender. The Rays did not score anymore runs, and Morrissey hit a RBI single in the seventh to give the Reds a 4 – 2 lead, the final score. Julio Robles of the Reds did a good job of pitching out of jams, allowing two runs in seven innings, and Freddy Gomez ( 2 for 4), Terry Brabender ( 1 for 4, 2 rbi), and Ralph Morrissey ( 3 for 5, 1 rbi) carried the Reds offensively. John Barber of the Rays went 4 for 4, and Rays starter Jake Peavy allowed four runs in 6.1 innings for a mediocre outing. In Game 4, the reds sent out Clarence Grant on short rest, hoping to tie up the series. Back to Back homers by John Barber and Luis Amador in the bottom of the first gave the Rays a 2 – 0 lead. Ralph Morrissey homered in the second to give the reds a run, and the reds took the lead in the fifth, on a RBI double by Devaris Gordon, and a two RBI double by Freddy Gomez. The Rays stranded the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth, but scored five runs with two outs in the sixth off Clarence Grant and Anthony Slama, giving them a 7 – 4 lead. Terry Brabender drove in a run in the top of the seventh on a fielders choice, but Gustav Van As hit a solo home run for the rays in the bottom of the seventh. The reds brought it within one run with a two run shot by Juan Fransisco, the only batter Nate West faced, but a caught stealing in the ninth by Devaris Gordon ended a rally, as Brian Wilson saved the game for the Rays. Freddy Gomez had a excellent game for the Reds (3 for 3, 2 bb), as did Rafael Moreno ( 2 for 4, 2 2b). However, the Rays hit three home runs, and Clarence Grant had a bad start for the Reds (5.2 ip, 6 er), as did Anthony Slama in his relief (0.0 ip, 2 h, 1 er, 2 bb). Though Rays starter Jesus Padilla was not great (6 ip, 4 er), he got his third postseason win, as the rays won 8 -7. In game 5, the Reds took the lead early, as Freddy Gomez hit a solo home run in the first, and Juan Francisco had a RBI single. Devaris Gordon also had a RBI single in the second. The Reds extended their lead to 4 – 0 in the fourth on a RBI double by Freddy Gomez. Though the reds did not score anymore, starter Anthony Thompson pitched six shutout innings, and, though Anthony Slama had another bad outing (0.1 ip, 3r, 1 er), giving up three runs in the bottom of the seventh, that was all the rays could muster, as Rafael Feliz of the Reds got his fifth postseason save in the ninth, sealing a 4 -3 Reds victory, as the Reds staved off elimination, and sent the series back to Cincinnati. Freddy Gomez (3 for 4, 1 2b, 1 hr, 2rbi) and Ralph Morrissey(2 for 4) continued their monster postseasons, as the Reds handed Josh Johnson (5.1 ip, 4r, 3er) his first loss of the postseason. In game 6, Jay Bruce drove in the first run for the reds, with a RBI groudout in the second. Freddy Gomez hit a solo shot in the third, adding another run. Julio Morban double in Jay Bruce in the bottom of the seventh, giving the Reds a 3 – 0 lead, and that would be the games final score. Julio Robles once again pitched a very good game, with seven shutout innings, and, though no one had multiple hits for the Reds, it is notable to mention that Jay Bruce snapped a 0 for 31 drought and got his first world series hit of the year in the 7th, with a double. Jake Peavy pitched a good game (8.0 ip, 3 er, complete game), but the Reds forced a game 7! In game 7, John Barber of the Rays hit a solo home run in the first inning off of Brett Devall, who the Reds were forced to use in game 7. Jesus Padilla got the first out in the bottom of the first, but Freddy Gomez homered in his third straight game, then Terry Brabender singled, and then Ralph Morrissey hit a two run bomb, as the reds took a 3 -1 lead. Tim Owens, however hit a two run home run in the top of the second to tie things up, even though a tampa runner was thown out a third. Devaris Gordon singled to start the bottom of the third for the Reds, and Freddy Gomez proceeded to do his best impression of Reggie/Utley by hitting his second home run of the game, and his fifth of the World series. The struggling Nate West was brought in, and continued to struggle, giving up a walk, and then, not to be outdone by Gomez, Ralph Morrissey hit his second home run of the game. The next two reds singled, but a outfield assist a home help the rays limit the damage to a 7 – 3 reds lead. In the bottom of the fourth, Gomez took a walk, and Ralph Morrissey hit a RBI double, but, once again, the Rays threw out a runner at home to get out of the inning. Brett Devall collapsed in the top of the fifth, however, allowing a three run home run to Gustav Van As, and another three run home run to Chris Young, both after two outs as the Rays rallied for six runs, giving them a 9 – 8 lead. Devall( 4.2 ip, 9 r, 6 er) left the game after a terrible outing. Julio Morban tied it up with a dramatic two out home run in the seventh. The game went in to extra innings with that score. To lead of the top of the tenth, Chris Young hit a triple, chasing Dallas Buck (4.0 ip, 1 er, 6 k) from the game after an excellent relief outing. Anthony Slama, in his relief, allowed the run to score on a fielders choice, but otherwise shut down the Rays. In the bottom of the 10th, the Rays sent out Brian Wilson for a second inning to win the series for the Reds. Pinch hitter Kedir Mutira singled to start the innings, and, after a passed ball advancing Mutira to second, Devaris Gordon grounded out, advancing Mutira to third. Freddy Gomez took his fourth walk of the game, and Terry Brabender singled home Mutira to tie the game up, and advance Gomez to third. Approprianly enough, Ralph Morrissey drove in Gomez to win the World Series, on a sac fly! Leading the offensive charge for the Reds were Freddy Gomez ( 2 for 2, 2hr, 3 rbi, 4 bb) and Ralph Morrissey (3 for 4, 1 2b, 2 hr, 6 rbi, 1 bb). Catcher Freddy Gomez (13 for 24 (.541), 5 2b, 5 hr, 9 rbi, 8 bb, 4 k) and Rookie Center Fielder Ralph Morrissey (11 for 28 (.398), 2 2b, 3 hr, 10 rbi, 1 bb, 3 k) were named the co – mvps. |
