Rating scales?

I am using OOTP8 for pretty much the first time and am still quite unfamiliar with it, so I've got a question regarding the rating scales.

In the Game Setup-Global Setup tab I have chosen 1-100 for the Rating Scales for Actual, Potential and Other. However, when I look at some of the player's ratings they are over 100. How can that be possible when the maximum rating is 100?

I'm also confused about the variances shown for individual players. Take Rickey Henderson as an example. Under his Ratings tab his Contact is 78 for both overall and potential, but when I click on the Editor tab it's 121 and 124.

???

Thanks for any help with this.
