Question about Vesting Option

Hamilton is in his last year of his contract which is a vesting option. If he doesn't get 500 plate appearances do I still have to pay him his 22 million or is it prorated or what happens?

If he does not hit his 500 AB's his contract will be voided.

If he's in the "last year of his contract", how is the vesting option relevant now?

Usually, a deal is structured like this:
Year 1
Year 2
Year 3 - vesting option requirements based on this year
Year 4 - option

If the player meets the requirements of the vesting option in the penultimate year of the total contract, then the option year is exercised. If they fail to do so, then it is not. It sounds as though the situation you are describing is that your player is in the last year of his contract, having met the vesting option requirement in the previous season.

If, however, what you are saying is that he is in the last guaranteed year of his contract, and his option year is still to come - then, that will only come into effect should he meet the terms of the vesting option.

Well the last year of his contract is a "vesting" option of 500ab's. So is this just to get him for another year if he gets 500 ab's? He DID NOT get 500ab's this last year only 340 and I thought that would have been his last year because of the vesting amount but I didn't get the OPTION to void his contract like I usually do with a TEAM OPTION.

You won't get an option to void his contract. It will automatically expire and he'll hit free agency on the day players can file in early November.

Ahhh ok thanks. Knew I shoulda went with team option instead of that vesting crap. What good is vesting if you don't save the money? I mean if he does hit the vesting amount of 500ab's what good does that do for ME? He's making 22 million that last year and whether he vests or not, just doesn't make sense. The vesting option SHOULD be for the PREVIOUS year and if he hit's it then I have to pay him one more year. As it is now he can sit on the bench never lift a bat and still gets that 22 million and I get SQUAT. Something is messed up there.

I don't think you understand what the vesting option is. The vesting option is when the player reaches a standard such as at bats. If he meets or exceeds the criteria he is given the contract for the next season, if he fails to meet the criteria he becomes a free agent at the end of the season. It is as simple as that. If he doesn't meet the criteria he is still paid full salary for the year. Also, if he does not meet the criteria for the vesting option, you will not get the option to offer him a contract, he becomes a free agent after the season.

If you have any questions on how the vesting option works please feel free to ask and someone will help you. I hope I answered any questions that you may have on vesting options. I think you are confusing vesting options with team options.

I think I understand what happened to you. You gave Hamilton a vesting option at the end of his contract with the parameters that he get 500 PAs for the contract to vest. So when you got to that final year of the contract, you thought that you wouldn't have to pay him if he didn't get 500 plate appearances, so in essence, he'd play that year for free.

That's not the case. The vesting option means that if he got 500 PAs in the previous season (next-to-last when you look at the contract length), the final year would kick in and you'd pay him $22M to play one more year. I'm assuming that must've happened.

If he hadn't gotten those 500 PAs in the next-to-last season, he would've become a free agent that year and you wouldn't have to pay him the final year of $22M because he would've become a free agent after the next-to-last season.

THERE ^ you've got it he DIDN'T get the 500 PA's in the next to last season he only got 340 PA's. So that's what had me scratching my head why is he still on my teams roster and still collection 22 million THIS year?

If that's the case, I don't have an answer. Can you post screen shots of his stats and his contract info?

What is your league date? What point of the season/off-season are you at? Did you just finish the season in which he got 340 PA's and he is still on your roster? Have other FAs entered the FA pool?

If you can post a screenshot of Hamilton's 'contract and status' page.

Well I'm in the next year now not going to wait on a "bug" it appears has happened but yes to your questions and when I first posted it was right after the last season ended.

So if he didn't get 500 PA's last year what good is the vesting if he gets to continue to play and get paid 21,400,000? I got screwed on this "vesting" crap because had I just went ahead and put TEAM OPTION there I would have gotten to decide if he stayed in 2020.

EDIT: You know what's funny after all of this? He's batting 9th and hitting .377 and is 3rd in team rbi's lmao. This game is so funny and silly sometimes. He hit like .240 last year and couldn't drive in a roadrunner in.

Perhaps Hamilton exceed 500 plate appearances, while getting significantly less at-bats. Can you check his plate appearances?

That's what I'm thinking. Between walks, HBP's, sac flies, etc., he may have crept just over that 500 mark.

I would recommend never using vesting options as I have found them to be much more harm than good. For starters, they count against extension money in the year so you go through the whole season being unable to use the spare room. When it's physically impossible for a player to reach a milestone like games finished, the option still won't void til the offseason. This works correctly in the game, but it is frustrating. Also, you can't cut the guy if he sucks because the money is treated like it is guaranteed.
