What Is Your Custom Award?
I created a custom award for the most stolen bases every year and named it 'The Ricky Henderson Award'. I have been thinking of replacing it (since you can only create one) with a 'Best Hitting Pitcher Award'. I was just curious what awards anyone else has created and the criteria to qualify for them.

I'm playing around with "Comeback Player of the Year" in a historical replay. Really helps me learn the entire league, as I need to look at the most recent three years of stats for players to make sure I'm capturing "comeback" correctly.

I've toyed with a few in the past:
The Hormel Chili Award - awarded to batter who whiffs the most during season, could be used for a pitcher as well. Boomerang Award - comeback player of the year Mr. Burns Award - awarded to player who defies age in league but is still competitive Three Headed Monster - award to a player who wins either a hitting or pitching triple crown |

I call mine the Red Diamond award, which is basically the MVP.
Reason for that is there is no true MVP award in the game. In MLB a cy young winner can also get MVP, in OOTP that can't happen unless you create a MVP award if you know what I mean. I look at the hitter award as if they only awarded 1 silver slugger award instead of each position. If there was a true MVP award I would probably go with either comeback player of the year or closer of the year (rolaids relief award...) I already did my own custom trophies (based on real ones) for my awards though (which are put onto custom baseball cards) so I will probalby stick with it. |

I used to use it for World Series MVP, or just in general, Postseason MVP.
But I stopped using it in my current league because I don't like how in order to use it, I have to forgo the progressive roll out of the various awards.... What I mean is, when using the manual awards, it then just awards them all at once on the same day, and not one each day for the whatever days it takes...

I've submitted an enhancement request to delay manaully chosen award winners so they're announced according to the standard schedule.

I used to mainly use it for MVP, and treated the Hitter of the Year as the Hank Aaron Award (although this messed up the history of MLB leagues). In one league automatic evolution introduced the Designated Hitter rule, so after that I used the custom award for best DH (more challenging than expected; the AI doesn't seem to use the DH very well). In another I had a different set of foreign player percentages, and I used it for the best foreign player.
But I didn't really like the way the custom award worked (the automatic awarding alluded to by posters above) nor its limitations (I'd love to have the facility to award Silver Slugger or Best Nine awards), so I have mostly stopped doing it. In one of the online leagues I play in we have multiple unofficial awards that the Commissioner simply edits into player history; in leagues I play myself, I tend to have a skim through end of season stats and imagine who might win various trinkets, and then just move on. |

Our Online League uses
The Toyota Award Toyota was a foreign player signed to an absurd contract, like $25 mil per year in an $80 mil hard cap league. He then posted a severely negative VORP in every season of the contract. The the dead albatross that he was would have made ancient mariners cry. The award now goes to the Leagues Least Valuable Player as voted by the GMs in the off-season.

Relief Ace award, best relief pitcher of the year.
My league has very different relief pitchers usage, and closers are unheard of, with top relievers approaching 100 IP. So, the top pitcher in VORP/WAR/FIP without a game started. |

So I am correct in assuming that the "hitter of the year" is considered the MVP award by the game, right?

Regular season MVP award for me. I use the guys that won the hitter award and the cy young award. Then see who's team made it to the playoffs. If a players team didn't make the playoffs then he is out. Then I take into account their fielding and if they did something historically.

Most Popular Player (MPP) = National Extremely Popular with highest career VORP. Creates mini-dynasties of true fan favorites like Willie Mays.

These are great. Hopefully the awards system will get fixed in future versions also to include more then 1. I would love to create multiple awards I can dish out at the end of each season.

Along with this how about allowing award images (like the trophy image), this would be a pretty cool feature. I would love to be able to add: -relief pitcher of the year -comeback player -Playoff or World Series MVP -silver slugger for each position -GM of the year (to go with manager of the year) Also would love the ability to make an award that only goes to 1 player in the entire parent league (so if you have 2 sub leagues, you can have 1 MVP for all of MLB, not each league...) |
