I'm also kind of anal and wanted the country of origin to be consistent, at least in some way, with the players' names. So I didn't want Juan Lustig from Italy or something.

Just started a new fictional league. It begins in 1961 with all the teams that debuted in 1961 or later (including the Twins, who weren't really expansion but did move to Minnesota, and both the Washington Senators - 2nd incarnation - and Texas Rangers, despite the fact that they were actually the same team). That gives 16 teams, 8 in each league. I've named the leagues the Federal League and Continental League after the two leagues that tried to challenge MLB.

I don't want to seem like an idiot, but I've been searching the OOTP mods forum all day and I can't find the Euro names file (if its actually with the game, I might throw myself off a bridge) In another idiotic question, what is the file which contains player origins? i.e. could I just use the American names file but create Australians, Brits etc ?
I like the idea of a Scots Premier league, but as a Scotsman myself, you'd need to have to alter the injuries list to add 'sectarian violence' and 'alcoholism' for the true flavour of the SPL. Perhaps their could be a 'holy war' option? OOTP doesn't have any options for bankruptcy either, does it? |

I think that you can get the Euro name files from BBSC, but they're under OOTP4 instead of OOTP5, if I'm not mistaken.

San Diego Baseball
For the past few months, I've been playing out the games for the Carlsbad Coyotes of the San Diego Baseball Association.
The premise behind my fictional league is that the Padres left Qualcomm Stadium for their new downtown ballpark, but then continued to play poorly and were subsequently contracted. Civic leaders and sports fans in the San Diego area pooled together their resources and created a new 12 team league in order to satisfy the local demand for quality baseball. Part of the resurgence of baseball in San Diego included the construction of a new 40,000 seat stadium in Carlsbad, named North County Stadium. Coming from an anonymous donation, and not taxpayer money, the new stadium is home field to 6 of the teams in the league. The other 6 teams call Qualcomm Stadium their home. Petco Park remains unused, as an army of lawyers blocked the new league from gaining access to the field. The SDBA consists of two leagues, the Inland League and the Coastal League. Here's the breakdown: Coastal League Carlsbad Coyotes Oceanside Pirates Del Mar Dragons Coronado Destroyers La Jolla Seals Tijuana Bulls Inland League Ramona Rattlers Poway Bullfrogs Jamul Hammers Alpine Gamblers Escondido Cavalry El Cajon Bandits Other local towns also have representation in the minor leagues: Carlsbad: Vista Vipers, La Costa Waves, Leucadia Pelicans Oceanside: San Onofre Atoms, Fallbrook Friars, Bonsall Express Del Mar: Encinitas Flyers, Cardiff Beach Bums, Solana Beach Riptide Coronado: Point Loma Lookouts, Imperial Beach Sand Crabs, National City Bombers La Jolla: Pacific Beach Reefers, University City Maulers, Mission Beach Storm Tijuana: Ensenada Sharks, Rosarito Fire Ants, Mexicali Caballeros Poway: Rancho Bernardo Bears, Rancho Penasquitos Valley Cats, Mirimar Jets Jamul: Tecate Fire, Dulzura Dragons, Campo Crushers El Cajon: La Mesa Thunder, Spring Valley Swingers, Lemon Grove Bats Escondido: Valley Center Cougars, San Marcos Lizards, Temecula Whinos Ramona: Julian Rustlers, Cuyamaca Beavers, Borrego Srpings Scorpions Alpine: Viejas Wheelers, Sycuan Blackjacks, Pine Valley Lumberjacks |

I played a historical league starting in 1903 and stayied at 16 teams throughout the 20th century. Since I have lived in many different states and cities, I used the names of the cities I've lived in (or went to school in) for the 16 teams. I then used nicknames that I assocaite with those places (e.g., the Peekskill Sheepdogs are named after Peekskill, NY and in honor of my first dog, a great Old English Sheepdog named Dudley).

Well, that was a problem. I let the teams draft the rookies and the FA pool was immense. The bottom line was that many players had shortened careers (even if their ratings were still good, they priced themselves out of the market and were not signed by any team so they retired). I didn't want the hassle of expansion but I learned my lesson.
I started a new league and expanded in 1920 to 20 teams and in 1940 to 24. The last expansion will be in 1960 and will get the league up to 28 teams. I didn't want to follow the real timeline for expansion. What has happened is that some players who either never played in the ML or just had a cup of coffee have gotten the chance to play in the ML for a few years. I figure that I will have enough players until the real expansions of the 60's and later add more players. Not having WWII helps as I will have all the players who went to war still playing along with the rookies and non-combatants. I only wish that expansion was built into the game. |

One of the reasons I enjoy fictional leagues more is the ability to set the number of rookies each year. What you could do, if you have good database fiddling skills, is delete guys who had less than a certain number of at bats (or other criteria) from the database. Alternatively, you could delete any rookies not drafted after the rookie draft.

Getting back to the original topic...I got bored with the usual MLB setup and am currently playing a Global League that includes, among others, Antwerp, Pyongyang, Hanoi, Budapest, Moscow and Boyne City, Michigan, the town where my dad was born. My team is the Niamey Meerkats...Niamey is the capital of Niger, FYI. I am also playing a Turkish League; my team is BC Trebizond. What can I say; Turkish names sound cool. I found a source of lots of lots of ethnic first and last names, and so I create my own dat files and each year the recruits in my leagues are all of a different ethnicity. I like lots of ethnic names in my leagues. |

Perhaps not surprising given my name here, I was thinking of making a league based on places mentioned in the works of H.P. Lovecraft. One league would be based on his dreamlands, and the other on his waking world, Cthulhu mythos lands. I would manage a team as Randolph Carter.

Wouldnt be a good Idea for an online league of course, but I always liked using small cities around me that im farmiliar with and then putting all my friends that I play softball with in the initial draft, and seeing how they do through the year, or just put them all on one team like are in real life in our softball league..

A great sourse of first and last names from all over the world. Bless Kate Monk and her work. If you want to make your rookie first baseman from Estonia, or from Tonga, or Mongolia, or one of the ethnic groups of Nigeria, you'll find the first and last names you need at this site.
