I could be wrong but I thought that this was a rule:
starting pitcher A - throws 6 innings and leaves with a 9 -2 lead. relief pitcher B - throws 4 innings (finishing the game) and the final is 9 -5. pitcher A gets a win but pitcher B gets nothing. I thought that if a pitcher came in and pitched 3 innings and finished the game, the pitcher was entitled to a save. is that incorrect? I know if they pitch one inning with 3 runs or less lead...it's a save too. |

It has to be three or less runs for a save. However if the tying runs are on base or at the plate and he retires them. And goes four innings then he will also get the save. Example 7-3 ball game bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the sixth, you bring in your reliever he get the guy up out to end the inning. Then he pitches the rest of the game allowing nothing then he would receive the save. Hope this helps.

And he can come in an only pitch .1 of an inning if the tying run is up or on deck. Doesn't need innings.

Relief pitcher has to pitch at least three innings for the save, so he could go 3 1/3, 3 2/3, or 4. Doesn't matter the number of runs he gives up (actually, it's up to the discretion of the official scorer).

The rule is "pitches effectively for at least three innings".
In your case allowing a run per inning, is not effective and he wasn't awarded the save. The OOTP4 official scorer is very conservative with the 3 inning saves. But if I were scoring the game I wouldn't award a 3 inning save to someone who nearly pitched the game into a normal save situation... (3 runs in 3 innings). |
