unrealistic opponent lineups?

Is there any way to prevent computer-opponent lineups from being out of whack? For instance, I played a 1986 season as the Mets, and whenever I played the Cardinals, they also had Van Slyke on first base, and never had Vince Coleman leading off. And then there was the Giants who had Will Clark batting second, ditto the Yankees and catcher Dan Pasqua, etc.

Also, how do you prevent the computer from pinch-hitting for players in the early innings?

Thanks!

Rob

I've found that if you set pinch-hitting to "Very Low", it won't actually be "very low" but "at a manageable level." Teams will still exhaust their roster in close games at this level, but they won't do it until the 7th inning or so, at least.

As for the rest of the stuff, it's just a really, really hard thing to code, I think. I could make a very good argument for batting, for example, Willie McGee or Tommy Herr and their better walk rates leadoff instead of Coleman. What'd be really accurate is to have a severe speed-over-power and average-over-OBP guy at manager (which pretty well sums up Whitey Herzog). Then (and perhaps only then) would you see Coleman at the top of the lineup. And what's wrong with Will Clark, especially in '86, hitting in the 2 hole? As for Pasqua... um, maybe he developed differently than in real life. The game doesn't know names and all that.

There are manager strategies that might affect some of this, and in patch 2 the commish will be able to adjust all the strategies.
