how to start in the 19th century

This might be a question that has an obvious answer, but...how can I start an historical simulation at 1871? I tried to start at that year but it keeps resetting the start date to 1901.

Also, as I simulate from season to season, is there a way to have real historical players debut in the Majors, in the actual years in which they were rookies in real life? (Again, maybe an obvious answer to this one...)
