Low number of triples in early year historical sims

Sorry fellas...I should have posted this here and not in general discussions. I'll try to pay closer attention!

Not sure if this is because the game is based on gap power, rather than straight statistics, but in most of my early year historical sims...1871 thru 1885...players with an inordinant amount of triples in real life, simmed to totals much less. The rest of their statistics came out very comparable, but their triples were low. Any thoughts as to why that might be?

For example:
1871 Ross Barnes
G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI SB CS BB SO BA OBP SLG
31 157 66 63 10 9 0 34 11 6 13 1 .401 .447 .580

Replay 1871 Ross Barnes
G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI SB CS BB SO BA OBP SLG
64 251 44 99 19 4 0 48 31 12 27 5 .394 .453 .482

There are quite a few others that if their stats were pro-rated out over 162 games that would have hit 20+ triples, but were in the 4 to 6 range in my 64 game seasons. My league leader only hit 6 in Art Allison, who hit 5 in 137 at bats in real 1871. Barnes was on a pace to hit close to 30 in a 162 game season, but hit just 4 in 64 games in my replay.

My league totals are what was provided for 1871, so 239 triples seems reasonable and my league equivalency is 1.00 ML performance. In OOTP 6 I know you could input statistics for created free agents and it would adjust a player's gap power, not just adjust gap power as a whole.
