Database of transactions by day
Hey all.
I'm looking to find a database that has all major league transactions for all seasons going back as far as possible. I can find websites that seem to access such a database, but I'm looking to get a hold of an actual database (or something I could easily make into one - hopefully something downloadable. I have this idea that I may want to recreate history including trades, signings, etc. on appropriate dates. I don't know if I'll really go through with it, but getting a database would be a first step. Anyone know where I could get this?

I actually just found what I was looking for at retrosheet. For some reason I couldn't find it before. They actually have a downloadable zip with every transaction listed. I couldn't have asked for anything better.

Just be aware that the Retrosheet data are not complete. There are still many transactions that remain unknown and unreported.

Yeah, thanks. I figure they've probably got the most exhaustive list, though.
Looking it over, I'm not sure I want to undertake this after all. I mean, there are over 60,000 transactions there. Even when I filter out the ones that would be irrelevant in OOTP, like amateur draft signings, I still see around 50,000. I think that's a bit much to keep up with for me. It would be cool to be able to have OOTP read the file and make the appropriate transactions, though it's not exactly a priority.

Before I accidentally formatted my hard drive I had something like that. I also had a retire and unretire list cause some players retire and unretire. So I'm gonna redo it. I will make a spreadsheet and match the players games played to that teams schedule if there is no historical trade date. If the player isn't traded then I will just mark him has released. I am also gonna redo my retiregunretire list.

This has been proposed on a number of occasions. It may ultimately come down to whether OOTP Developments considers it acceptable to use a data source that is only partially correct.

Yeah but they use a modified database for historical
replay in cases where there is no data. So why not just add it as an optional database? I'm sure people are not gonna go crazy over 2 mistakes but its better than doing it manually and would make The game more enjoyable for historical simmers. |

Yeah, it's fine if it's inexact. It could work in conjunction with the Lahman database by refreshing the rosters each season - i.e., if there's a record of a guy playing for Team X in year 1 and Team Y in year 2, but there's nothing about it in the transaction file, the game could move the guy automatically and maybe just record it as "[player] moved from Team X to Team Y".

Does the game recognize the AA,UA, etc abbreviations now.
I had database for the rookies for each league. I still haven't got OOTP 11. Not that I don't want it but I'm stuck with an old system And I'm slowly building a new one. |

Spritze claims to have a Lahman/OOTP-compatible Transaction.csv.

I Are Showing This Having File Claim
Here is a sample. It is way to humongous to upload here.
I put the full thing on my ftp site. Has not been updated for a year or so as there was no interest in it from nobody and I don't use it the way I play da game. |

The retrosheet database is actually much more correct than you'd realize, at least in terms of comings and goings as long as you're only focusing on a player's professional debut with a major league organization and then his transactions during his major league career. Where it is lacking is in minor league transactions and post major league transactions.
For when the player is floating around the minors it may be missing a few but if he played in the majors for an organization it has when they went to that organization. I use this database for doing the opening day team assignments in the Gambo/Spritze database and really have not found that ommision. The transaction database will occasionally have designated "January 1960 Joe Blow goes to Los Angeles Dodgers in an unknown transaction"

Based on what I've seen, the data is there. Is there enough interest in including it in OOTP12? Would it sell more copies? BTW, as-played lineup files are available, too (at least from 1901).

Even Puresim has real-life transaction and as-played lineup files. I'd hope to see them in OOTP, too.

If it's not a programming nightmare, I think it could only help bring more people in.

4,517 Major League Players have no entry at all in the transaction database. Is that close enough? About 200 of them are players that debuted in Lahman after the last TranDB Update so they don't count.

Only 25% that's not too bad. This is also part of the reason I combine info from the transaction database with your minor league stats when doing my database. It fills in alot of voids and gets me as close to accurate as I can.

Wow, that's a lot of missing transactions.
Is it accurate back to a certain date? I.e., are there players who debuted after, say, 1980 who are not in the transaction DB?

If the average player had 7.51934 transactions in a career that might be 33,965 missing transactions give or take. Of course that 7.51934 number could be suspect itself as I just made it up. Anyway, that could be a bunch of missing transactions that might be missing in a transactional transcendental sense tangentally targeted.
