Another Potential Scoring Problem

Top of the first. Leadoff man singles. Next batter singles. Runner from first heads for third, error on the throw from the right fielder allows the batter-runner to advance to second.

Runners on 2nd and 3rd, no outs. Both batters reached safely without the benefit of an error, the error only allowed the trailing runner to move up 90 feet.

Next batter triples, scoring two.

Yet the pitcher is only charged with 1 earned run. I believe both those runs should be earned, as they would have scored regardless of the error.

This is with the latest patch (2.02 full).

Is the CPU thinking that if there had been no error the runner on first would've been out at third?

I agree that the game seems to be shaky on what constitutes an earned run, and this may very well be one of its mistakes. There have been requests (probably already TTed) to be able to edit statistics. That would come in handy in cases like these.

Good question. From what I recall of the play-by-play, the runner going from first to third was safe at third, the throw coming in late and getting away from the third baseman allowing the batter-runner to go to second.

Not that the play-by-play is the ultimate arbiter of how the scoring goes, but it's all I have to go on.

I'm not 100% sure that this is how the rule is supposed to work, but it sounds right. I'll TT it, just to make sure. If someone knows better than me, feel free to speak up.

The way the rule works is that if you recreate the inning without any errors, any runs that would've scored anyway are earned.

In ifspuds example, without the error there would've been runners on first and third with nobody out (because the error wouldn't've been an out even on a good throw, which was what I was asking in post#2). Both should've scored on a triple.
