Question Scoring Bug

I was playing Cleveland vs LA Angels and this scoring bug occured for Jeremy Sowers

Batter reaches on E5
Runner retired on FC 6-4, Batter reaches 1B
Hitter hits two run HR
Next two batters make outs

Statistics show 2 ER given up. This should only be 1 ER.

I wasn't sure if anyone else posted this.

Thanks

Did you find this using version 2.0.2.53 of OOTP?

Based on the information you provided it seems like there was a man on 1st with no one out. You cannot assume a double play, so the fact that the runner on base was retired, the batter simply reached on a fielder's choice. In that case his run would be earned after the next batter hit a HR.

The problem in this case is that no error should have been charged at all. Again, since you can't assume the DP, and one out was made at 2B no error was made.

On top of that if the force was made 6-4, then how on earth does the third baseman get an error if he never touched the ball?

jeter, I think you're combining two different plays into one. The intended situation is the following, I'm sure:

-first batter reaches on an error to the third baseman;
-next play, grounder to shortstop, out made at second, batter safe at first on fielder's choice;
-2 run homer
-2 outs.

The original analysis is certainly correct; only one run should be earned.

Okay, then that makes more sense as far as where the E5 comes from, but still the guy who reached on an error wasn't even on base when the HR was hit. That being the case, and with only one out, then both those runs have to be earned. There is no scoring bug or anything wrong with the way that play went down.

If you replay the inning without the error, then the first guy is out 5-3. Without him on base to be erased on the fielder's choice, the second batter goes out 6-3 and there's no one on when the third batter gets his dinger.

FC as un unearned run

In my scenario, the second hitter who hit into the FC is now the runner at 1st. To determine unearned runs, you have to reconstruct the inning as if no error took place. Therefore, if the error never occured, no runners would be on base, and there would have been 2 out when the HR was hit (1 Earned run). The runner on 1st now takes the place of the runner who reached because of error. His run is unearned.

This situation is similar to a pitcher who allows a basehit and is replaced. Pitcher #2 gets his first hitter on a FC. The batter he faced is now at first. Next hitter hits a 2-run HR. 1 Run charged to pitcher #1 and 1 to pitcher #2. The FC runner took the place of the runner allowed by pitcher #1, therefore that runner is still his responsiblity.

Just some scoring quirks of baseball, which is why every game is different. That is what makes baseball outstanding.

Just to add my voice to the choir, bobm has it right the whole way. If the game charged 2 ERs in the original example, there is definitely a scoring bug.

This was marked as something that cannot be reproduced. Without screenshots, I believe that we may be out of luck.

bobm64: Do you have a gamelog for the game in question?
