error on sacrifice
Stats error on sacrifice
<HR style="COLOR: #3b4b7f" SIZE=1><!-- / icon and title --><!-- message -->I had a guy on second w/ no outs. I sacrificed him over by bunting to the 3rd base side. The 3B threw it to first and the first baseman dropped the ball for an error. Instead of a sacrifice I got an 0 for 1 on the play. It should still be a sacrifice and 0 for 0 for average. |

That's the kind of thing that would make me tear my hair out. Errors can be so tough sometimes.
I'm wondering if the batter getting on base voids the sacrifice. If you were sac bunting with a very fast batter and he 'accidentally' beat it out for a hit (I saw this happen with the Mets last week) it would count as a hit (1 for 1), not a sacrifice (0 for 0) regardless of the batter's intent. Could the same be true for getting on via sacrifice? What should the scoring look like if the batter sacrificed, then reached via catcher interference?

Check out rule 10.09.
http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/official_info..._scorer_10.jsp This should be a sacrifice. If the runner reaches for any reason and the official scorer felt that the batter was attempting to sacrifice to advance the runner(s). Last edited by bogieman; 07-08-2007 at 02:21 AM. |

10.08. Good catch on that.
(As an aside, I was surprised to read in that section that a sac fly is only scored if a runner scores on the play. A fly ball out that advances a runner, but no one scores, is simply an out.)
