PNG vs. BMP

For logos we are making for the upcoming game, should we be saving them as PNG instead of BMP? Would that be better for people?

Not sure but I think Markus said that Jpegs(and PNG's) will be used instead of BMP's.

That's correct. Markus said this back in November:
Quote:
The dimensions (90x135 for pictures, and 150x150 for logos) remain the same, however .BMP is no longer supported. You can use .JPG or .PNG files... PNG do support transparency, which is cool for team logos.
It seems PNG is the way to go as far as resolving any future transparency issues as well as maintaining colour quality.

However, at what point do we make the transition? I'm not sure.

It seems that the logo format is going to have to be specified in any future requests, as some may want them in either Jpegs, PNG's or even BMP's, since not everyone will neccessarily be migrating over to the new game right away.

I saw that the new game is changing formats, too. I am wondering if the large requests we are filling are for the future or for the current game. I agree that we should probably start asking if this is for the current game or for the future format. Good suggestion.

Yeah I think I didn't say in my requests that the logos were for OOTP 2006 butthead thing on my part, the logos that reds and knuckler have done for me so far I can change into png myself as it's easy enough with paint and I can find time at work to do them lol.

I have saved almost all of my logos in a Photoshop file so I can convert all of them to jpeg, png, or whatever.

So until I get requests specifically for png's/jpegs I will make them in bmp format. There might be several who will be using prior versions and will want bmp's.

Using the freeware program IrfanView, you can batch convert files from one format to another, so if anyone has a large collection of bmp logos to convert to one of the new formats, it can be done in a matter of seconds.

Is there a quality difference between PNG, JPEG, and BMP? If not just do them in whichever saves the smallest. If there is then I'd just start asking. Me personally, I have IrfanView, so I can just batch convert to whatever I want and the quality seems close enough to me that it doesn't matter.

BMP is by far the largest file size. JPEGS can be encoded with different levels of compression from large but better quality to small but blurry.

In general PNG should give you the best quality to filesize ratio (if I'm not mistaken, someone correct me if I'm wrong,) which I think is why the new version of the game is moving to that format.
