Event Generator
As mentioned in another thread, someone created an event generator for High Heat.
I'm not a programmer, but I'm pretty proficient with Excel, and a while back I made an event generator for OOTP. I couldn't find my full version of it, but here is an incomplete version. Here's how it works: There are two sheets. One is called Events and one is called Results. The Events sheet consists of two columns: Column A is numbered from 2 to 1001, and column B is a list of events that might happen during the offseason or during the season. The closer an event is to the middle, the more likely it is to happen. In fact, the event listed as 2 only has something like a .0004% chance of happening (I put "Whole 25-man roster dies in plane crash there. Yikes!). The Results sheet consists of three columns. The first is a code for choosing an event from the event list. This is randomly generated. The second is a player number. Most of the events affect a specific player, and this would be the number of the player. I've allowed it to choose a number from 1-3000. If you hit F9 (re-calculate), the random numbers on the Results sheet will be regenerated. You can copy the rows to make more events if you wish, or use less. Whatever you want. You can run it between seasons or several times during the season, depending on how often you want events to occur. There is almost nothing listed in the Events sheet. This was an early version, and I can't find the last one I did. I think it's on my old (discarded) computer. Anyway, if anyone has any ideas for events, post them and I can add them. You can anything you want to your own copy. Obviously, it's just an Excel file, so it doesn't alter the player file and make changes or anything, but you can use it as a guide to make changes to players yourself if you'd like. Anyway, let me know what you think...

Here's an event I posted about a couple of pages back: war time military service.
I worked up the actual percentage chances of a player leaving for WWII military service, and for how long, based on the actual effects the war had on MLB rosters. That would definitely add some interesting twists to roster management. By the way, the event you listed where an entire ball team is killed in an airline crash actually has been considered by MLB. When air travel became more widely used, MLB was forced to create a contingency plan in case of such a disaster. I forget the actual details of the plan, but it was first tabled by the leagues on January 29, 1957.

If one were to use an "event generator" for a solo league, how would the effect be translated into the game? What specific files would need edited and how? Would most of these events only necessitate house rule sorts of implementation, i.e. Player XYZ misses the next 14 games because of.... (where and how would you enter that in some text history?)
I'm sure you get my drift. What would we do once an event does occur and how do we do it? Thanks in advance. |

I don't know if this falls into the "Life Imitating Art" category - but this events table is so "Coover-ish" as to send chills up my spine. I'm sure Henry will know what I'm talking about. (Especially if one Damon Rutherford should meet with an unfortunate demise.)
Avalon Hill's Statis Pro baseball (a really good board-based game from the 70s and 80s) had an unlikely events chart as part of the game, too. It covered everything from triple plays to ejections to rain outs and fights. |

Exactly what is in the "event" portion is entirely customizable. I've put very little in there. If anyone has any ideas for good events, post them here. I could update the spreadsheet if there is interest. Just for reference, an event listed at entry 2 will have a 1 in 250,000 chance of showing up on any given line in the results. An event listed at entry 500 (the most common) will have a 1 in 500 chance of showing up.

The version is -99.-01.-24 ![]() If peoples want it, I could add free agent and coach later and affect directly the OOTP files for players in team only. Last edited by PLG; 03-11-2004 at 11:12 PM. |
