Cato's History

Argh, it never ends.

I'm getting an error message when importing the players.csv file. It says that there is an error in line 2, and that it is probably an error in the nickname or home state fields. It tells me to open the file in Notepad, turn off word wrap, check for odd characters, and import again. The problem is that everything looks normal. What else might be the problem?

sometimes if a person's nickname is too long, OOTP will put weird characters at the end of the nickname. Usually something like a square box. So just go through your players.csv file (you can open it in Excel too) and find which players have a nickname that's too long, then go back into OOTP, change the players nickname to something shorter, rerun Commish Joe's exporter and then import again and everything should be fine.

Another thing that chokes the item is quotes in a player's nickname.

If a nickname in OOTP has no quotes around it, then it will show up like this in the player.csv file:

"Hammer"

If a nick has quotes in OOTP, then it will show up like this in the player.csv file:

""Hammer""

You need to remove one set of quotes from the csv file.

An easy way to do this is to open the players.csv file in Excel or a similar spreadsheet program. The nicks that have quotes will be readily apparent, and you can go back into the original CSV file to fix them.

As indicated before, having a nickname that is too long will also cause problems. You can edit the nick to make it shorter through the same method.

You also get this message sometimes if you use the newest Commish Joe exporter vs the one on the Cato webpage...

Thanks for the input

Really great, y'all. I appreciate it.

I tried simply erasing all of the nicknames and that didn't work. So that's not the problem.

I am using the newest version of the exporter because it actually has the schedule.exe file needed to export the schedule files. The one on Cato's page doesn't. I'm thinking of going back and downloading Cato's version, but making sure not to erase what's already there, so that the schedule.exe file is still there.

Once again, that's great input. Thanks for the help.

This is almost certainly the cause of the problem, the exact same symptom and accepted solution has been posted here before. The error is actually on line one, and I believe it's the extra fields that the latest CommishJoe exporter adds which the Cato program is not designed to use.
