Question for Logo Designers

I know there has been a thread on these boards before regarding how the logo creators actually go about creating the logo. I believe it was almost like a how to. I just bought Photoshop and wanted to try creating my own images from the how to- that was previously made.

Anyone remember the thread.. or would be so kind as to try and help me find it, or write up there own how to-

I use Microsoft Photodraw. I can't really give you a "how-to" for making logos, I usually just picture the colors in my head and get an idea for a picture to use. Then, I just search for a picture that looks like that and just put text over it. Usually, my logos are either:

1. City name on top, picture in the middle, nickname on bottom.

or

2. Team initial(s) over a background picture.

I usually just pick one of those and go with it.

Just play around with Photoshop till you get the hang of it. If you can imagine it Photoshop can do it. There on hundreds of tutorials online that are very helpful.

Photoshop is a very powerful, professional level program. I used back when I was working in the graphic arts business.

Probably some of the best things to know in Photoshop with regards to logos are:

1) Working with layers. You can use layers to isolate specific parts of your image, and that's very useful. You can also create adjustment layers, which are for changing such things as the brigtness or colour of your image. Since the adjustment is in a layer, it can be changed at any time as needed.

2) Using layer styles, which are great for applying effects to type such as embossing or beveling, and so forth. Very powerful feature that can do many things.

3) Keyboard shortcuts. There are a lot of things you can do in Photoshop, and doing them all via the mouse is tiring after awhile. Learn the most commonly used shortcuts and your wrist will thank you.

Another way of learning the good stuff in the program is to browse your bookstore looking for some good how-to books that show in detail how to achieve various effects. One of my favourites in the area are the "Photoshop WOW" books; I have the book for 6, and it is really good. It shows step by step, with lots of pictures, how to do all kinds of neat things.

I also recommend that site. I've been using it for a long time to help me do many different things, and most of it has become very easy. There's lots of good tutorials there that you will find useful...

I'm still at the part of just trying to edit text

Well, trust me on this, working with text is FAR better in either 6 or 7 that it was in earlier versions. Currently, text is initially treated as vectors, meaning it is always editable (though to do some certain effects to it you do need to rasterize it).

In earlier versions text was always rasterized, meaning changing or editing it was a huge pain in the butt. I recall those days with a distinct gladness that they are long past...
