All-Death injury.txt file

As brought up in another thread, I think it's a good idea to make an all-death injury.txt file, so I'm doing one.

What are some interesting ways in which a man could die while playing a game of baseball? I can think of plenty outside of baseball, but I'm trying to think of some that could happen during the game.

I tried this last night, but had a small problem. If you set the injuries to always be death, the game didn't generate all that many injuries.

So that meant I did not get the results I had hoped for: teams with players dropping like flies, the New Section filled with Huge blow for Player X, Career Over headlines. So my initial complaint about OOTP not supporting Death League Style play is valid.

Here's a possible way around it: instead of "death, set it to career long "99%" injury. I'll give that a try.

I don't know. I'm beginning to think what OOTP does is generates an injury and the numbers, then scans the injury.txt file for a suitable injury and randomly selects one of those. If it can't find a suitable injury because it is less than career-ending and there are no injuries less than career-ending in the text file, it proceeds to ignore the injury. But that's just speculation on my part and I would prefer to have Markus tell us, and if he could possibly tell us how to get an All-Death injury.txt file to work.

Did you set injury frequency to high?

First I set it to Very Low because I figured that all injuries would turn into career-enders. But then I saw that nothing was coming up, so I set the injury frequency to Very High. Still very few deaths.

But boy, it was quite a shock this morning when I said dangit and loaded up my regular league instead, went to check on a guy who was Day-to-Day and found out he had the Bubonic Plague.

Hmm maybe this thread would help:

injuries question

Do you have every injury situation covered in the file?

Yes, I made sure every situation 1-10 was put in for things like Death, Bubonic Plague, Autoerotic Asphyxiation.

So again, I believe the game generates a number 0-255 then scans through the injury.txt file looking for injuries that have that number. If that's true, that means basically any time an injury occurs, there's a 1 in 256 chance of it being career-ending.

I've also had the thought of a short season league (10-20 games) where the winning team gets to execute a member of the losing team, either a guy of their choice or the player that performed the worst on the losing team, I hadn't decided. It would get to be a hassle to manually career-end guys after every game so I never ended up making it. You would have to have a huge draft to keep the player pool well-stocked. It sounds similar to what you had suggested in the other thread.

I was definitely anticipating having huge draft classes, plus maybe having to intervene wtih Fill Minors if necessary.

That would be unfortunate. It would be nice to adjust those frequencies even for more serious leagues to simulate advancements in medicine and conditioning or to simulate more primitive medicine.

Funny how something like this might end up teaching something about how OOTP generates injuries.

It's not that much of a hassle to manually career-end guys. Granted my league only has 16 teams, but it takes less than 10 minutes to manually edit them in the game and put a note in the player's news section.

Follow link to the elimination league in my sig...

ctorg/Gastric - I can't find the original thread where you talked about an all death injury file... I'm surprised you're having so much trouble editting the injury file to get the desired results...

Well you'll get the results, but the frequency isn't what one needs. Right? There are two values, min time and max time, which go from 0-255. 254 is the career-ending value. So last night, I set up a file with the min/max times set at 254, and started up a league.

I believe what happens is OOTP sees that an injury occurs, and generates a random number to determine length. It then scans the injury file to find an injury that has a suitable min/max range and selects from those potential injuries.

That sounds like a good idea. It could be a coma or something along those lines. However if GR is right it still won't work the way he wants it to. Let me know how it works for you. I want to simulate "harsher" injuries for my viking-era league and this research would help me set it up right.

did you try just changing the min/max in the default injury file (after making a backup copy)?

If you get the same results, then I would agree with your theory. Otherwise, maybe there is something missing from the injury file you made.

Oh yeah, made a backup of injury.txt with injuryorg.txt. Maybe you're right if I just turned the default injuries' values it could fix a problem I introduced in the process of new names, but that has to wait until I get home.

1) Your player gets attacked in the bullpen by a rabid, drunken, typically-obnoxious New Englander groundskeeper. He is killed by a +2 Rake of Destruction.

2) Your outfielder lets a ball bounce off his head and into the stands for a home run. The manager kills the outfielder.

3) A kid runs in front of home plate, and is saved by your First Baseman ... who is plowed down and killed in the collision at the plate.
