Cato Error(s): Duplication of Abbreviations

Okay experts, I'm having trouble importing the .csv files from my second solo season into Cato.

First message I get is this:

Anyone wanna help me with this one? I'm not sure why it's showing duplicate team abbreviations. And what's even more confusing is why it's showing some that are duplicated and others that aren't.

Any thoughts?

Have you by any chance imported the data twice in one season. I'm not positive but I think this problem can come up if you did not set the correct league ending date as well. Going to have to defer to Killebrew or someone a bit more experienced than I on this one though, but I do vaguely remember those two things being possibilities in getting that many duplicate errors.

You know what? I did...maybe even both.

I tried to re-import my 2001 season because I forgot to import the All-Stars to begin with. It gave me a message that it couldn't overwrite duplicate data, or something the like.

I shrugged it off and figured I'd just have to go without All-Stars for that year.

Now...is there anyway to fix the problem I've created for myself, or have I dug my own hole here? If so, that sucks. C'mon Jeff, don't you program for dumbasses like me who don't read the directions in order and then try and "fix" things on my own.

Seriously though, if anyone knows how to beat this, just lemme know. Otherwise, looks like it's time to start over. Boo.

do you have a back up of the database from the first year?

if not I think you may be stuck.

Which file(s) would I have to have a duplicate of to have a backup. Obviously, I still have all the html documents, since I can't import anything else.

Most likely, it isn't backed up though, since I didn't do it (on purpose anyway).

So time for a startover then?

Not to sound preachy, but you really should backup your data files. It's really not that difficult. What I do is this. I have a folder called History, under that I have a folder for each league I keep histories for. Each league has a data folder. This is where I create the CSV files. I also copy the 3 HTML files to this folder. After I import the season, I simply zip up the CSV & HTML files and name it after the season. The zip file isn't very large and if I ever need to redo the database I have all the data available.

Also, you should also backup the database before importing the next season. I usually make a backup before the import and another one before creating the HTML pages. I can then go back a step if I need to. This might be a bit of overkill, but its faster than starting from scratch.

The All-Star import is separate from the season import. You import All-Stars on the All-Star screen. Some people don't like the players OOTP picks, so this lets you import them or manually select them.

To help with this a little bit, I've add a check in the next version to prevent importing a season twice.

Bottom line, at this point, your database is pretty much hosed. If you don't have backups, you'll need to start a new database.

Dude, you're not being the least bit preachy. Just stating the facts. BTW, you know I was kidding earlier in the thread, right? That was a weak stab at self-depracating humor.

I religiously back up at work, but rarely do so at home unless it's personal finance stuff. Just not all that important to me.

However...I'll be doing this from now on with your program. And thanks for adding the "dummy proofing" for the next time around. I really appreciate it.

I'm still in the trial-and-error phase of playing with your program, and this is exactly why I started it with a solo league first. Just so I could iron out the kinks (mainly human error) before I start to do this for online leagues.

Thanks for the input fellas, and thanks for the database Mr. Cato. I look forward to your next iteration, at which time I will pay you for your time and help.

Back to work...

paz,
