davwms' Origin Generator - anyone ever get it to work?

I downloaded "davwms' Origin Generator" from:

http://www.ootpdownloadcenter.com/Utilities.html

It looks like it might be great, but I can't seem to get it to work and keep getting an "Error 53."

Has anyone else ever gotten it to work?

Oh, and here's a big raspberry to Joe for leaving my Historical Name Generation file set off of his revised website.

I would like to give this a try also but am unsure how to use it. Do I export something from my current league...change it (by copy and paste as it says) and then import back in? If so, what do I need to export?

I haven't left it off Mal. Still not done with the site yet. In fact I have had quite a few people email me for the file and I have sent them the file everytime. It will be up when I'm done.

The files should be extracted to the league directory. Inside the league directory you should have OOTP_Origins.exe and a folder named "OriginData" that includes ten .dat files.

Before you can run the program, you need to export the player_general.csv file from within OOTP6. Then, run OOTP_Origins.exe.

If you are getting an error when running OOTP_Origins.exe, usually it means that there is a file missing. If all of the .dat files are there, it usually means that the .csv file is missing..

Does this help at all?

You don't have to copy-paste anything with this program. In BT's version, you would have to cut-paste, but my program does it all automatically. Just follow the instructions completely and it should work fine in OOTP6

Thanks! Got it to work, but there was one error and a consistent omission.

One player is from "SunshineyCoast Aus," with an umlaut over the y, which I assume is supposed to be the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia.

And the players from Columbia just wound with: "COLUMBIA."

I will have to fix that.. I did notice the issue with COLUMBIA, haven't gotten a chance to correct that..

How to use "davwms' Origin Generator" to generate 100% American cities as places of origin:

1. Create your league

2. Export player_general.csv file from within OOTP6

3. Edit the player_general.csv file with a speadsheet program to make all of the origins read "USA" (you can cut and paste to do this)

4. Save the file as a .csv file and exit the spreadsheet

5. Import the modified player_general.csv back into OOTP6

6. Re-export player_general.csv file from within OOTP6

7. Now run "davwms' Origin Generator"

8. Re-import player_general.csv back into OOTP6

You have to do the double export-import because "davwms' Origin Generator" won't read any .csv files but the one that OOTP writes.

The good news is that it works.

Hey, Davwms, you have 2000 or so U.S. cities in your database. Want to get more? Explain what the numbers mean in the .dat files and I'll try to build a U.S. city data base that will really rock.

The data comes from BlueTurf's origin maker, but the file format is basically, the number represents how common that city would be used. The number with the city minus the number for the city above it would be the number of chances out of the total (which is the number for the very last city.

Example:
Aberdeen SD, 25 Aberdeen has 25 chances out of 151005
Abilene TX, 149 Abilene has 124 (149-25) chances out of 151005
Addison IL, 186 Addison has 37 chances out of 151005
...
Zion IL, 151005

If I am not explaining this well, it would also be just as easy for me to modify the program so that the number for each city is a rating for how common that city would appear. The higher the number the more common it would come up.

This is really a lot more simple than what I am writing. Let me know if you understand.. :-)

I got it! Let me take a look at what data I can come up with.

The original data for the U.S. cities was from the census and included towns over about 15,000. I can not seem to locate the original web site I had compiled the data from.

15,000? That's pretty good, I may not be able to improve significantly upon that.

Both these hometown origin generators sound impressive.

I'd be thrilled with "merely" a random number generator that lets you assign proportions for national origins. For example, you could set it so that:

1-14 accesses the English names file for the newly generated player, with Nos. 1-13 producing a USA origin while setting 14 for Canada.
15-19 taps the Latin names file, and 15=Mexico, 16=Cuba, 17=Dominican Republic, 18=Puerto Rico, and 19=Venezuela.
And 20 uses the Asian names file and produces an origin of Japan.

Sure, the random numbers could instead go 1-25, 1-100, or even 1-1,000. I just wanted to keep the example, and idea, as simple as possible.

This is definitely doable.. maybe set it up so the user can adjust the settings as they want. So the origins of the players match the location/style for the league... I'll look into this when I get some time..

That would be great! Please don't forget to include a USA-only setting!

It works well already; if he gets it switch-selectable, we'll all be rocking.

I would definitely like the multiple national origins. Your program has seemed really neat but I mainly run non-US leagues so I haven't used it yet.

That'd be terrific! I'd appreciate it, thanks.
