CatoBase 6.1.1 example

I don't know if there's an example on his site, but I've got an example of a 6.1.1 CatoBase for a league with a 29-year history. If you're interested in finding out a little more about CatoBase, you can find it here.

The draft history feature is especially cool, and I like the addition of managers to the team history pages, too.

This is my solo fictional league that I'm sporadically writing about over in the Dyasty forums, so I hope this demonstrates that CatoBase isn't just for online leagues.

Cool, I almost am inclined to re-do my... 27 year history but don't know how to re-import all those years.. the managers with the team history is just awesome, but the links to the manager's pages are wrong.

I'm really liking the draft history as I can see how futile my drafting has been. Although my number 3 starter was picked in the last round on the first year I took over my team.

How do you have managers in a solo fictional league? Are you entering them yourself and "firing" them, or am I missing something?

Right, and not all of them have managed through the entire career, which would suggest that perhaps he has "firing" criteria for them. That's what I'm guessing at this point, but if there is a way for each team to have a computer-assigned manager, I'd be all over that.

Nah, at the end of every year, just after running CatoBase, I'd fire/retire some managers, and hire and re-hire some guys to take their place - specifically so the manager pages in CatoBase would look more "real" and add more storyline to my dynasty. I do it by just changing the name under team setup. I will usually fire a guy if he loses 100 games, finishes in 5th or 6th two seasons in a row, or just generally sucks for three or four or more years. In some bigger markets, I have fired guys more quickly. And some managers are staying with their team their entire careers, some for 25+ years.

I took over a vacancy as a manager after season #25, and at some point in the future, I'll move on to another team. I wanted to track it without using Manager Mode, which I hate.

I have a spreadsheet that I use to track the hirings and firings of managers, to make sure I don't have the same guy in two places at once, and so I can bring back guys and let them manage multiple teams (Sammy Nesbit!). The spreadsheet is posted in my dynasty thread, (shameless plug) which is linked in my signature.

Oh, and my dynasty is a direct result of your original OOTP dynasty on FOFCentral, SkyDog, posted in April. I read along until you dropped it, and then started my own. I've patterned by monthly reports pretty closely off of what you did, so thanks for the inspiration. :-)

Yes, the manager's links are broken off the team pages, but I'm sure Jeff will fix that.

No, you don't have to re-import all those years. After your next season, use 6.1.1 to import it and create .html (make sure you create all years for all team and recalculate win shares for all years) and you'll get the new stuff, including the draft history.

I used the historical names pack - put them into a spead sheet and wrote a manager generator that picks a name for the manager, the number of years that he has to manage ( with an editable hi and lo value field). I then just go into my utility at the end of the year and all managers that have finished last in their division gets 1 subtracted from their max years column. I then just hit a hot key and it subtracts 1 from each manager year and if it hits 0 a new name is entered into the row to replace the previous manager. I don't want to have to support the spreadsheet so I did not put release it as a utility for use, but may once I get itto be user friendly....

To spice things up a bit I move between 18-33% of the managers each season to represent a firing from one team and hired by another. Example in a 16 team league I moved 4 managers last season; managers 1, 2, 3, 4 went to teams 2,4,1,3 so that it was not a simple one to one swap of managers.....

This makes the history much more interesting to read in CatoBase....

Well my solo league, from 1970-1998 I haven't controlled a team yet (getting to 2004 then picking up the worst team.)

So I enter managers, and it is great. One of my favorite parts of outputting catobase is checking out the managerial records. I base firings off of W-L to Pyth. W-L, if a team has been terrible and a new guy comes in he gets a few seasons to correct the problem though, stuff like that. Picking names I just find guys that retired 5-10 years previous.

I guess I'm asking is that referring to importing the "pre-sim" histories, or is it referring to importing the stuff each season like "Was Injured on 6/14/2024, out for 6 weeks"? I DO want the latter, but I don't need the former being redone each year. Also, if I copy the team logos and player photos once on the import, do I need to do that every year?

I import everything every year - I never really change the options. Importing really isn't the time consuming part - importing a season for me generally takes about five minutes. It's creating the .html that takes a while. Plus, I'm always worried that if I don't import something, there might be a feature added later that could have used it, and I'll have to go back and re-import everything. Since importing doesn't take that long, even with everything checked, I just make sure I'm putting into the database everything I can.

I also don't mess with any of the options for copying team logos or player photos - I just leave them checked every year.

Perfect example of this is the new 6.1.1 requiring the player histories in order to do the draft history.

Import Player Histories means the text stuff. Checking this will open each p###.txt file and import any new lines into the database. This is where the draft info comes from, since every player drafted should have Drafted in X round,... line in his history.

The "pre-sim" stats come from the bat_career.csv and pitch_career.csv files. To save time, CatoBase only imports these files if the tables in the database are empty. So, basically that means the first year imported is the only time these files are imported.

This time-saving feature led to a problem when CommishJoe updated the career exporter to fix the bug that prevented the first year from being exported. In order to able be to get that year into an existing database, you have to use the Delete Pre-Sim Stats option under the Database menu. Then, when the next season is imported, the career stats will be imported again. The seasons that overlap with the simmed seasons will not be imported, however.

Note, a major drawback here, though. If your league has many seasons, then some players will lose their career stats and not get them back. If the player is no longer in the league, then their "pre-sim" stats can't be exported and therefore not reimported into CatoBase.
