Ping: Image Experts
For the most part, I think I've got photos for just about every 1870s player for whom an image exists, thanks to Pyroman's excellent resource on the APLB website. However, I'm about to start the 1874 season of my solo league, and there's one player who had a lengthy career for whom I don't have a real image. That player is Orator Shaffer....
I realize this may be a hard one to come by, but I've seen some of you work miracles in the past. Anything anyone can find would be a huge help, and would be greatly appreciated.

Some things that may help:
1. His last name was originally Shafer, not Shaffer. Somewhere along the line it got changed. 2. His real first name is George. "Orator" was a nickname. 3. He was the brother of Taylor Shaffer, also an MLB player.

I've just imported my rookies for 1875, and added what pictures I had. Again, there are many for whom I doubt any real image is available, but four players with actual major league careers stood out, and I think there may be pictures out there for them:
George "Grin" Bradley Charley Jones Sam Weaver Oscar Walker I've got them listed in decreasing likelihood of success (i.e., I'd be surprised if Oscar Walker turns up, but I can't believe there's nothing I can find for Bradley). Again, any help would be greatly appreciated.

I know this isn't really related but I found a cool site while doing an image search for George Bradley. It has a listing of all the whacky/weird nicknames of players from the Deadball Era. There's some cool and interesting ones to say the least. The site is http://www.thedeadballera.com/nicknames.html if anyone wants to check it out.

I spent about an hour looking around on a few search sites and such and wasn't able to come up with anything. Those photos are either non-existent or are going to be very hard to find.

Thanks. Can I ask how you found it? I've noticed that some people seem to able to get hard-to-find images really quickly, while others (me, for instance) do google searches that lead nowhere.

And that is indeed the Charley Jones I was looking for. Thanks.

Here are a couple of results I got for George Bradley.
I highly doubt that either one of these are the baseball player, but they seem to be a good fit for the era. http://community.webshots.com/photo/...13035586SiVmhN This one looks a little more recent. Maybe early 1900's. http://www.rootsweb.com/~vapage2/bradley-george.jpg

Thanks. Maybe I'll resize that first one and use it, since it appears that there aren't any images of the actual player out there. Strange - he was a good pitcher for a few years there, and I have images of many "lesser lights" of the 1870s.
I guess maybe it's because he never really played for any of the marquee teams of the 1870s - most of the guys I have pics for played for either Harry Wright, Cap Anson or Charles Comiskey at some point.

Nineteenth Century player photos
Eckstein,
I'm coming late to this thread but here are two (very poor) images for George Washington "Grin" Bradley. These are both from group collages so a lot of resizing will be necessary: http://www.bluecurl.com/ncbbp/search.asp?search=bradley (top image= the Bradley headshot is very fuzzy when enlarged) http://www.theruckerarchive.com/ No direct link for this one, but do a search for the 1883 Philadelphia Athletics. Bradley is at 3:00 in the ring of portraits. The names on this one are illegible, but trust me on this (I've figured out IDs for everyone else in the collage except the center people, who seem to be the team owners). And, since we seem to be working on the same project: did you ever find images for Dory Dean or Tricky Nichols? SABR's pictoral history project says that pictures of these two guys exist, but I've come up empty looking for them. |
