New Utility - Ratings Comparer

Here is a new utility (with a screen shot) I wrote that compares the ratings/talent increases/decreases for players from one sim to another. It uses CommishJoe's OOTP6 exporter. You just point it at two seperate league folders and it compares the rating difference for players between the two sims. The file includes a readme.txt to help you with the process.

I'd be happy with any feed back the community has for changes and enhancements.

Install
You can install this application where ever you find most convenient.

The application uses the .NET 1.1 framework.
If you don't have it get it (and other updates) at:
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp.

This application also comes with files from CommishJoe's OOTP6 exporter.

Running the Application
- In the first text box select the the league folder you want to use as your starting point. You can browse for the folder by clicking the small button to the right of the next box.

- In the same way select the league folder you want to use as your end point, usually this is the most update league folder.

- Hit the generate button. The export will parse the the files and set up the dataset.

- A new screen appear. Select the team for which you are interested in see the changes.

- Click the check boxes to select what areas want to view.

- That's it!

Version 1.0 notes
- Right now the application is filtering soley of the PlayerID. If you are comparing leagues folders not from the same season you may see some radical jumps or drops in rates for rookies.

- Fielding rating are currently not included.

- Make sure the league folders are from the same league. The application will self-destruct if the aren't! ;)

I have a new update for this that fixes those problem encountered when there are "commas where commas don't belong".

Not trying to knock you off or anything, but some basic outside-of-program documentaion would be nice. For example, a simple "readme" file would go a long way. Additionally, more detailed description and screenshots will probably generate more interests. This way, people will have a clearer idea on what this utility is about.

And for comma, yeah... commas in the quotes don't count as the separation marks for different cells. Too bad that I only learned this after I made the same mistake in my utility.

For the program itself, I think it might be better have only a single row for a single player so that the window is not too clutered in any way. For multiple rating changes in a same player, you can just have more columns for each ratings. However, then you would have to think of a way to make multiple rating change indicators fit properly into one row.... Anyway, these are just my thoughts.

Thanks for the comments Jayzone. I think the addition of a readme/helpfile is a good one, as well as providing a better description in the thread. I'll add that.

Your other suggestion is interesting, but I think (and this is just my opinion) that it would make the screen more cluttered, and result in a app that would take up more desktop space.

Oooohhhh, been looking for a prog like this for awhile. Sadly, the app doesn't seem to work:

The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000135). Click on OK to terminate the application.

Anybody with any ideas? I shall be eternally grateful.

Hmmph. Nevermind. Needed the .Net framework...duuhhh.

Looking forward to next sim of the league I'm in to give it a whirl. Thanks for the utility. Most appreciated.

Hey Ben-
Utility works nicely. But I like to keep all of my league sims, so I can see all increases/decreases over the course of an entire season. Up until now, I have just been coping and renaming the entire league file. This will eventually take up a good chunk of my HD space. Am I right in that the only files within my league folder that need to be kept for the utility to work are the "league", "players" and "teams" DAT files?

Also, it's be nice if maybe users could export the increase/decrease reports as a text file, or at least allow for highlight-right click-copy. If I could do that, then I wouldn't need to keep the copied league folders. I could just keep track in a text file, or a spreadsheet. I'm no programmer (and, even after 7 seasons, apparently a lousy OOTPer) but this seems like an easy thing to add.

Either way, thanks again for the utility.

To be honest, I'm not sure. The program internally used CommishJoe's exporter to generate files that I then analyze. You could ask Joe for a definitive answer, but if I were I betting man, I would think all you would need to keep would be the .dat files.

That would be a cool feature! Unfortunately, I'm a little swamped right now, but keep on checking, I just might get to it some day.
