Banner Designers: What size is best?

I am having a website created for my three leagues.

I would like for the banner to stretch from one edge of the screen to the other...or at least 75% of the way.

What size do you suggest?

I have seen some that looked to be as much as 925 x 150. Do you think this is too large?

I would also appreciate comments from those of you who have websites and the size banner you prefer.

Comments from those who don't have websites are also encouraged to give their opinion.

I think 800 in width might be best since it would then be pretty much guranteed to be optimized for the most people. Anything under 1024 in width should be fine though.

The majority of the banners I make are 800 x 100. I have made 12 banners at 800 x 100 (or 110, 120, and 150), but only 4 banners over 900.

925 x 150 will probably work, but I wouldn't go over that. Anything over about 125 in height is getting kind of high for a banner, and when you get over 800 in length, you run into the possibility of problems if any users of your site are using 800 x 600 dimensions (although very few do nowadays, so that's why I say it will probably work).

Oh, and let me know if you need any help designing the banner.

Well, i think also it depends on how you make your site in size. All size about 800 * 100 are good for Banners. It´s also good because you have enough space for putting some things on it.

I'd stick to 800 because many people (around 33%) have a 800x600 resolution. Go to: http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp and scroll down to display resolution to see the stats. 800 will look fine to someone who uses higher and most do, but greater than 800 will generally not look good to someone using a 800x600 resolution.

EDIT: Oops, I'm sorry. I'd actually go a tad under 800 (760?) because you have to take the scrollbar into consideration. To see what I'm talking about, create a simple black jpg 800 pixels wide. Change your display resolution to 800x600. Use your browser to open it up and you'll see that a horizontal scrollbar appears (or your browser might automatically shrink it to screen size, which won't happen in a site unless the web designer shrinks it which might look bad, so click on it to bring it to regular size). You generally don't want to make your viewers scroll right.
