Edited Lahman File Problem
I read a post earlier about someone wanting players to enter historical sims when they turn 18 instead of their first major league season - so that they can develop in the minors before they are ready. I thought that this was a good idea and I had some skills to attempt this.
I edited the Master file of the Lahman csv files so that their debut year was 18 years after their birth year. This meant that all of the players in the draft were either 18 or 17 ( turning 18 that season ). It seemed to work OK for all position players but almost every pitcher enters the league as a MR and the Top 100 prospects are all hitters. I thought that maybe the pitchers would eventually develop into starters so I simmed ahead a few years and there doesn't seem to be any positive development there - some did turn into SP but they still had ordinary ratings. Am I doing something wrong? I used the default settings on the Historical League setup so I then tried it by adjusting the pitcher settings on a second league but it wasn't much better. Any suggestions on what I should do? You can get the Master.csv file here if you want to try it yourself and suggest anything. http://www.users.tpg.com.au/21c/Master.zip |

The Master file is only one of the changes you need to make. You would also have to change the batting, pitching, fielding, and fieldingOF files to match. That is, since you changed the debut year of everyone, the master file then looks for that year for that player. If that year is not there, you get "made up" ratings. What you need to do is change each file so the first year matches their debut year, then each year after that needs to follow that (don't just change the first year).
BTW, this is not a quick and easy process |

Thanks for the response.
I suspected that the first year had to match the debut year but I still thought that the ratings were based on the career stats that followed. Thanks for putting me straight. I might still fool around with it a bit to see what I could do - I've been using Visual Basic to make the changes on the file so it's not too big of a job. |

The overall ratings are based on the import year (which doesn't match in your case), but the talent ratings are based on career stats, so you may only have to change the first year in each file. I haven't tried that, but it seems like that would work. The talent ratings are not correct now, b/c OOTP is linking that player to the correct data (or any data for that matter). Let me know if just changing the debut year in each file works.

I've had some success. I was able to get the pitchers to import OK but the problem is now that the players are too good. I'm getting too many players ready to start straight away after being drafted.
What I did was that I edited the Batting, Pitching and Fielding csv files ( after editing the Master one originally ) by adding a field for the year 18 years after they were born. They all import OK as 17 and 18 year olds but the good players are too good. I'll try and tweak it some more when I get a chance but I'm going on vacation from tomorrow. Even with the quirks, it has still been fun to sim through the seasons. |
