Is Cato still worth it?
I have not used it with my new league but with still some bugs and errors from time to time and without jcato here anymore, is it worth using CATO any longer? It will most likely not work with OOTP7 (in fact, I hope Mrkus leanred a few things from jacato if anything).
What are your guys thoughts? edit: I just want to make it clear that this uitility is amazing and it certainly is worth it but what I am trying to say is that without support, is it still worth using for a series career. Last edited by Maximus; 01-30-2005 at 10:44 PM. |

It took me a long time to try CatoBase, but once I did, it became an indispensable part of OOTP for me. I can't imagine running a league without it now.
Hopefully, one of three things will happen when v7 rolls around: either Markus will have added a Cato-like system into the game, Jeff will have resurfaced and be ready to bring out a new, V7 compatible version for us, or someone else who knows how to program something like this will make one for V7. |

Well, it depends on many things. First, seems like Cato is no longer around, thus driving me think that the release of OOTP7 will mark the end of his utility. Second, even if he was around, looks like OOTP7 will have little to do with the previous versions. Therefore, we'll have to wait and see if Joe (or anyone) can put up a new exporter (which is pretty much the key here). All in all, it remains to be seen if (and how) OOTP7 really allows the import of previous versions' leagues.

Just tried Cato for the first time with my latest league. I had absolutely no problems with it running and it's been a great addition to the league. Like many have said, can't imagine my league without it now. Guess that's a suggestion that you go ahead and use Cato for the next year (or whatever it is) until V7 comes out.

Yeah, I just finished getting it working with just a solo league that I had been casually simming, and now I can't see myself not using it for all the leagues I will do now. I just wish there was a way to import all the previous seasons. I will be using it for my modified replay league, and my current career league.

Though it seems Cato isn't around, some people just need a break from this kind of thing. His latest version of Catobase is probably the most stable, most complete version he's created - I would say since he isn't on the OOTP Developments or SI payroll, getting burned out answering all the questions he must've received about errors, or bugs, or suggestions would be pretty easy. I wouldn't rule out a comeback for Cato after the v.7 release.
And even still, I don't worry about it. There are enough coding-savvy followers of this game that if Markus doesn't beef up the almanac/stat-tracking features, that someone will create some sort of utility that will get the job done. |

He came back to improve the utility far more than I ever thought it could be improved, and along with it came the numerous requests for troubleshooting once again - look at it, for awhile 99% of the Mods forum was threads regarding Cato errors. My guess is that Jeff will take some time off, return when he's ready, and once again improve the program and have it ready for OOTP7 after its release.

Catobase has gotten easier and more stable for me with each version. Since I even felt it was worth it back when it was almost beyond my capabilities to use it (I'm not very tech-savvy), it's certainly worth it now. I would never even consider running a solo league without it.

CATOBASE is a great utility, but I am sure that as long as there is are exporter utilities, someone will create a CATOBASE like utility. I hope Jeff is just taking a break and will continue with this utility but if not someone will. We can just wait and see. With out a CATOBASE for version 7 I will stick with OOTP6 a little longer and see if 7 has a better almanac or if a version 7 utility becomes available. OOTP with out CATOBASE is like Spaghetti without the Meatball - still good but a bit incomplete.

Hammer's sig reminds me of the good old days when people complained about my sig being too long. Can't even remember what it was... Anyway, you have 2,005 posts in 2005. Congrats.

The whole no new OOTP until the end of the year (or whenever) isn't really going to set in until around April. That's gonna suck.
