A couple of Questions
I have never played an OOTP game, but preordered OOTP06 & I was wondering how a few of the aspects of the game worked.
1. I'd like to start a historical league and replay the mid 80s Mets with Strawberry & Gooden. If I start in 1982, before either is on the Major league roster, will Straw just appear in the minors in 1983 & Doc in 1984? Do I have to draft them in the ammatuer draft? How does that work? 2. I may be wrong, but I thought I heard that you could have as many as 50 players on each minor league team. How do they all get enough playing time to improve? And how much does playing time matter for player development? 3. Will there be some kind of Baseball manual? I'm sure the game will have a file that explains certain parts of the game, but I have no clue how options or waivers work, how you know if someone is arbitration eligible or how many arbitration years they have, I'm even a little foggy on the 40 man roster & how it works with the rule 5 draft. I've also heard of a minor league portion of the rule 5 draft, is that in the game? 4. If I decide that I want to join an on-line league where do I find one? Hopefully my questions aren't too repetitive or silly. Any insight you could provide would be appreciated. Thanks. |

I can't answer all of your questions because I don't know, but I can answer some:
In the past, historical leagues gave you the options of importing historical rookies. So if Doc or Straw are about to be rookies, then you would import them from the database. Oviously if you have 50 players on a minor league team, no they will not all get enough playing time to improve. If you want realisitc results, you would need realisitic roster sizes. Question 3 can be answered I know by looking these up on MLB.com. I don't know the answers for sure, but I know those answers are out there. I usually have that stuff turned off. And I am sure the search function on this forum has threads about that stuff. Sorry I can't help you there. I know how they work in concept but not well enough to explain them. Question 4 is simple... Right now there are no online leagues for '06 because it has not come out yet, but if you want to try 5 for free or buy version 6.5 and see how you like it, there is a leagues forum. Just search in there and usually someone has an opening, or post in there and someone will pick you up and show you the ropes.

Okay, stupid question, but:
What exactly IS the rule V draft? I never use it because I don't know what it is.

I don't know about you others, but I never really used the Rule V Draft very much. In OOTPB, typically, I would see older players of average quality at best. The real trick is that once you take the Rule V draftee on, you are severely restricted as to how you can use him. If I have a fair amount of money to throw around, and if I am left with a big hole in my lineup just before mid-season that cannot be filled by minor-league players, a trade, waivers, or free agents, then I would go to the Rule V Draft. I think I've only done that once or maybe twice -- at least once to see how it worked.
Still, Rule V exists for a reason, and maybe others have had more success with it than I have. |
