Game log abbreviations

What do the abbrevations in the game logs mean?

For example in this play:
3-1: TRIPLE (Line Drive, 9M)

What does the "9M" mean?

I'm going to guess the number is the position(s) the ball was hit toward and/or the scoring of the play.

I've seen these:

M
D
LMF
MD
LD
LM
RD
S
and then sometimes just a number with no abbreviation

Any info? I checked the game guide and couldn't find any mention of these.

My guess is its a way to denote a high arcing fly over a "normal" fly ball since high fly balls give fielders more time to move to the ball to catch it.
