OOTP13 or 14?

Hi all,

I've been lurking and reading a lot about the game, and since it doesn't look like Steam will be adding it anytime soon, I think I'm going to take the plunge.

I've played the demo a few times to ensure it's a game I'd like.

My question is whether I would be okay to get OOTP13 or if I should wait and pre-order 14. I have read enough reviews to know that I wanted a newer version (though $5 for 11 on amazon was tempting), but I don't generally drop $40 on a game, especially one that I see changes yearly.

The $20 price for 13 seems just about right, but if anyone thinks that's going to be a big mistake and I should wait and pay for the newest version, I'd love to hear pros and cons.

Thanks,

Rob

Hi, Rob: Welcome!

I'll let others comment on 13 vs. 14 - I will say, however, that you were wise in skipping 11. 11 wasn't bad by any means, but the game's changed by leaps and bounds since then - IMHO for the better.

It might help if we knew more about what you plan to do with the game. Do you plan to GM only? Manage the lineups? Manage the play-by-play? How about historical vs. modern vs. fictional leagues?

Good luck!

Thanks!

I expect to GM primarily, playing things out from time to time. I love the potential to have a long-lasting world, and playing every game every day seems like it would take forever to see how, say, a game where I start with the 62 Mets gets them from doormat to Champion and beyond.

When I used the demo, I did some play by play, letting the CPU take over if the game was out of hand. I thought it was useful, but I don't feel like I need that level of control. (I can play a console game for that.)

I'm not sure about historical vs. modern yet. Both appeal to me, but I dunno which I would start with. I might play out a modern league as GM and sandbox a historical, or vice versa. I'm probably least interested in fictional.

For those who create the dynasty leagues--how much in-game management do you do? Seems like having a decades-long league wouldn't lend itself to managing everything.

PP if 13 is available for $20 I would buy it. You can convert whichever league you start with on 13 over to 14 at any point in your season. As much as I love OOTP I have learned after 12 to wait until the 2nd patch is released before I buy the game depending on what known bugs pop up in the 1st few days/weeks of it's release. So many things were added in the 3? patches to 13. The last patch was I think in October? I 1st came back over a few weeks after 11 was released and still have 11 and 12 loaded on my PC. (had 6.5 hated it). There will be a few manor differences between 13 & 14 but none that should hurt any new leagues.

Either way you will love OOTP. I have 7 active leagues. My newest being my Magnificent 7 Dynasty. My oldest 2 are my custom and my ABF a 16 team Fictional league.

If you want to play in online leagues against human GMs you may want 14. When leagues have turnover they will often upgrade to make sure they can fill any GM vacancies.

Not completely disagreeing but online leagues often wait for several updates before switching.

For $20 you get the best available version right now and you can follow the reaction for v14 here. That's a no lose proposition from my PoV.

Disclosure. I'm such a fan boy I buy each version as soon as it is available. The pleasure vs cost benefit to me is better than anything else I buy FWIW.

The only reason to wait is if you want to use up to date rosters. If you don't mind getting both, there's no reason not to get you feet wet with 13.

Otherwise, the quotes, about online leagues waiting to move to 14 is generally true, but there are leagues that will start off with 14 right away. Of course, a lot of leagues will stick with 13 until 15, so you really can't lose either way, and with both you'll have more options.

Thanks to all for the help. I got 13, and am testing things out with a no-minors historical league starting in 1871.

It's weird that the game puts the teams into two four team leagues to artificially create a championship game. I didn't see a way to alter that, but I may have missed it. (I assume I could create a fictional game and import the historical players, but given I am new to the game, I thought that might overwhelm me. Part of why I went with 1871 was to keep my tasks down while I get my feet wet.)

Unfortunately the setup for 1871-1900 is....ahistorical. From what I understand there was a time OOTP didn't really like it if there was only one league and this was the workaround. After 1901 things run fine (except no Federal League 1914-1915).

Now I'm pretty sure it no longer matters, so you could always fix the teams if you chose. For just getting your feet wet though, leaving it alone isn't a big deal.

One thing to keep in mind is a game in 1871 is going to 'feel' very different to any game you've ever watched. Simply put you're in the early deadball era. I might have recommended a year closer to when you started watching baseball. You could still turn off all the bells and whistles like minors and secondary rosters until you were comfortable.

Regardless, good luck! Speak up if you have questions. You may also want to wander by the Dynasties threads to see what games other people are working on. It'll give you insight into different strategies, different methods of play, and even some of the database and graphic mods out there.

my thoughts exactly! plus, I would like to add, how is the gameplay on the demo (OOTP13) different from the paid gameplay? I love to GM but I love managing on the field as well.

I was so tempted to pick up the Steam version, but a friend informed me about the OOTP website when I started snooping around Amazon for prices. Looks like I might have found a happy home after catching baseball fever once again!

I tried going into advanced mode, but it didn't seem to want to let me. As you said, not a huge deal.

I'm a fan of baseball history, so I knew what I was getting into. Man o man, the errors flow like water! (I know this is because of bad fielding % that when is placed in the game engine, shows up as errors/PB/etc.)

Panel i forgot what the record is for errors in one game is for MLB but I remember I was within a few of tying it. 32 I think. I am in 1915 in my historical league which I started on OOTP 11. I am gonna love on 14 that it will take care of changing uniforms and logos for me since it becomes tedious to change them myself every November 1st or each Preseason.
How do you have yours setup? I had the World Series and ASG from 1871. White Stockings (Cubs) have won 7 with me and the White Sox have won 15 of 24. I use Gambo/Spritz DB which has Negro, Japanese and PCL players but brings most players in at 18 so I have an advantage ion the draft. I have Babe Ruth as my #3 SP and plays RF 2 days a week.

Hey Thanks,

Sounds like we have similar set ups, but I just used the default database this time around.

I'm only in 1872, but I am holding first place. Last year, my Baltimore Canaries got to the World Series, but lost because I screwed up and only had 1 pitcher that year, who was fine during season but gassed in WS.

My owner is super demanding, so I am likely to get canned if I lose a second WS in a row, LOL.

I recently came back to the game and my most recent iteration was v12. From what I've seen 13 added quite a bit but I'm holding off until 14 is released as it too has significant algorithm changes. Of course 13 is a finished product whereas I'm guessing 14 will have several updates before everyone is happy with it. I just feel $20 is quite steep for a game which is being updated in a week or two. Suppose it comes down to whether or not you believe you will upgrade from 13 to 14 anytime soon.

I would be curious which ones of you actually do play out all your games, in addition to all of the GM activities that the game offers. I am an APBA nut (or rather that is where I come from) and to manage in-game is interesting to me. Do others in solo leagues actually manage their teams from the dugout? If so are you a defensive manager? Offensive? Small-ball? Power?

Fro most of my league I am the GM/MGR & SP or RF. In these leagues I play out as much as 90% of the games as little as 50% Depends on where I am at in the standings at the ASG. In one league I control everything as the GM in the other I let the AI handle my minors. In my favorite league i have a great teams the 1st 6 yrs. Offense in #1 in the league as is the pitching. BTW this is a fictional historical league until 2036. 2nd team never finishes above .500 even with Carlos Zambrano & Ervin Santana in 2011. Or maybe that's why i didn't finish above .500 that year. i left off in 2012 before i had to redo the league but in teh 1st few weeks of 2012 i had a decent pitching squad and no offense. It is an expansion team and plays in Griffith Park which is huge.
My other league i am in 2004 after starting in 2000. I won the Championship in 2002, when i was lucky to make the playoffs then dominated in the playoffs 8-3. I am trying to turn this team into a powerhouse but i keep failing. offense this year i have tons of power but only one guy hitting .300 My min boppers are having off years in the .260 range ro points below their career avg. Pitching is weak and i am overrun with injuries and have 3 rookie SP.
