Email League

I have no idea how successful this would be or if it has been tried before.

I'm poor and not very web-savvy (or is it saavy?) so having a website is out of the question, for me. But, I've always wanted to run a league. This could (theoretically) work.

The deal: I email out the file. GMs make their changes and email it back. I import all the changes, run the sim. Then, I email the file back out, with a calculated inventory of what went on during the sim.

A couple downfalls: I don't know if this could be a "sim so many days, every day" league. Possibly. I'd love to do 15-20 days a sim, a sim a day...if you catch my drift. The lack of a website would most definitely suck, with no way to get the player pages up online, neither catobase or a forum. The lack of a forum is probably the biggest thing. How does one do free agent offers, and trades even? No real way to contact the other owners (other than email, messaging services...). It would work like fantasy sports did back in the day. Except then you usually called your buddy up on the phone and worked a deal out that way. Not so much in this case.

Has anyone tried a league this way before? How successful was it? Would anyone want to try a league this way, or are we all pretty much locked in to all leagues have a website? I'm interested in people's thoughts on this.

You could email the league file and have owners email you back with their exports which you would import on your end before each sim. However, some people may have limits on the size of email they can receive. That could cause problems.

That was the plan.

You do present a problem, but I thought email has evolved into something where we can have large files stocked away? Probably not for long periods of time, but with the advent of GMail and the like, I thought it was possible to send large files? I'd have to look and see what the limit is on mine.

One of the owners in the WCBL (hint, Missoula Vris ) ran an e-mail style league that was quite successful.

If you had a place where you could host the league file for download, I don't think you'd have a problem doing this. You'd only need about 20 - 30 MB of web space.

That's the thing. The file wouldn't be hosted anywhere. After each sim, it would be emailed out to everyone in the league.

I know nothing about "hosting a file", thus the question. It would be a lot cheaper and easier for me to email it out.

Hosting a file is easy. Get yourself some free web space. Zip the file after each sim and upload it. Give the link to your owners.

There's no cost involved.

Emailing it would be very difficult, especially as the season wears on and the file grows. Even if you take out unnecessary files, it still gets up there in size.

Get myself some free webspace? Upload it?

These are foreign thoughts to me. I have no idea how to do any of those things. I do, however, know how to email.

I guess I'll have to do some more research.

I hope you're at college on a sports scholarship. If not, good luck.

Not everyone is a web designer/developer/network guru you know. You probably insulted half the board with that.

Well said. People all have different skills and lack several skills as well. That's what makes society work. We all do our parts.

That was uncalled for. I graduated college with a BS in Mathematics, thank you.

And sports are hardly my strong suit.

What does using Google have to do with being at school with a sports scholarship? Since you're bringing absolutely nothing of consequence to this thread, I will ignore you.

Are there any other people out there who would be interested in such a league? I've gotten a couple of responses, but I'm still looking for more inquiries.

And thanks Fidel. I'll think about it.

I think he was stating that you could find out how to host/upload a file by using Google.
