Rules to prevent "tanking"
Anyone seen any clever ways to prevent GMs from "tanking" to improve their draft position for the following year? I'm in a league whose commish suspects that it's going on by more than one owner, and he's looking for ideas on how to stop it. I should mention that this is a historical league that uses no financials at all, so monetary stuff won't work.
He's considering a weighted draft lottery for nonplayoff teams in which the better a team was, the better chance it would have of a high pick. Any other ideas? Last edited by chicoruiz; 10-10-2006 at 08:26 AM. |

The MLBC has kicked one owner out of the league in its 52 seasons of simming, that owner was kicked out for tanking. If I see a team using a suspicious lineup I email them a carefully worded warning. With the one exception mentioned previously I have never had to send a second warning. A big key though is careful screening of applicants, there is definite profiling a commish can use to weed out the high risk owners.

We have requirements for rosters in terms of positions and backups. This probably helps a little. We also have a tourney with non-playoff teams that we hope gives some incentive for teams to try a little harder.

Although 'tanking' isn't a problem in the NPBL, there has been a decrease in competitive balance over the years, leading to a league that now features good teams, bad teams, and little in between.
jeheinz72 and I had chatted about ways to alter the draft to encourage bad teams to strive to do better (an aside for npbl owners reading this; this won't be happening in our league ) without overly punishing the teams that are truly devoid of talent.Anyhow, I'm curious to see if anyone had ever altered the draft order to reward bad teams that try hard to win...

Problemis a lot of times the bad times are also bad GMs to begin with. They just don't know enough or pay attention enough or care enough. They might not grasp all the concepts.
One way to stop the top teams from bilking the bad ones is to not let them give up their top prospects. Stop letting them trade draft picks, make them keep drafted players two seasons (so they can see how good they will be). Say finish in last or next to last, or something. |
