Pioneers of the Diamond (POTD)

POTD is a 28-team fictional league that was created in March, 2003 real-time as an OOTP 5 league that paralled the release of OOTP 5. In fact, the web site creation and ownership recruiting began before OOTP 5 was released.

We started with the 2003 season with 24 teams and then expanded to 28 teams prior to the 2005 season. As of today, we've completed 16 seasons, and we're now currently in the offseason of 2019 (Opening Day 2019 will be held in about a week). We upgraded to OOTP 6 upon its release, and then we upgraded again to OOTP 6.5 upon its release. We are now using OOTP 6.51a, and unless something drastic happens, we'll be using 6.51a indefinitely in the future. Here is a breakdown of which seasons we used with different OOTP versions ...
  • POTD 2003-2006 was simmed with OOTP 5.
  • POTD 2007-2011 was simmed with OOTP 6.
  • POTD 2012-current is being simmed with OOTP 6.5 (now using 6.51a)
There's several reasons why we never converted over to 2006, namely ...

1) If it isn't broke, don't fix it! Our league has been peaking with overall activity during the 6.5 simmed seasons, and we haven't had a league opening in several seasons now. So long as this continues, there's no reason to convert to a newer version and risk losing part of the excellent ownership foundation we currently have.

2) There were reports of league file corruptions when other leagues proceeded with the conversion process from 6.5 to 2006. Whether this was due to commish errors in those leagues, bugs that have since been patched, or sheer bad luck, we did not want to risk going down that same path. Our league office and ownership group has spent far too much time on the league and individual teams to risk losing everything with an attempt to convert to a new version.

3) Too many reports of OOTP 2006 being too complex/non user-friendly as well as not being friendly toward online leagues. Shortly after its release, some league owners commented that they didn't even know how to play 2006 and that the complexity of the version intimidated them quite a bit. OOTP 6.5 is in-depth enough for everyone to thoroughly enjoy, but it's not so complex that it's difficult to learn while also being highly time consuming.

4) We've been using Catobase in our league, and Cato is an incredibly valuable tool, especially with a large league history of over 15 seasons now in our Cato history. One aspect our league strives to do is preserve the league's history - we have a Hall of Fame, for example - and Catobase is phenomenal for just that. If we converted to 2006, we'd be forced to sort of split our league's history with pre-2006 simmed seasons and then 2006 simmed seasons.

Version: OOTP 6.51a

The league in real life started April 21, 2005. Using 2005 rosters, it lasted through 2012 before restarting October 5, 2006. Using 2006 rosters, the 2007 season is almost complete.

I bought OOTP 2006 using the preorder function and I have barely used it, and just bought a new computer. The OOTP 2006 game remains on the old computer, as I didn't think it was worth it to bring it over.

The statistical engine, the contracts ... it's all great stuff in 2006. The interface, to be blunt, is a joke. OOTP 6.5 has a great and easy interface. In 2006, it can get overwhelming with virtually no space in between the reams of names and stats all in white font with a blue background. It's just overly complicated and is not intuitive at all. OOTP 6.5 is genius when it comes to it. It's easy, simple, streamlined and not overwhelming.

When the new version comes out, I will not be preordering. I will follow the screenshots and the reviews with fascination and I will ask my friends what they think of the game. I will not consider moving my league over until the interface becomes far more intuitive, simplistic and streamlined.

Just compare the two screens of both games:

OOTP 2006: http://www.sharewareplaza.com/images...shot/22242.gif ... numbers heavy with no "space" to breathe.

OOTP 6.5: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...screenshot.gif ... As I mentioned before: easy, simple, streamlined and not overwhelming.

A note: OAK is open in my league if anyone is interested.

The American Baseball League
version = 6.12 (though have the game is not required)
Around since May 05
First year in game = 2004, current = 2009

personal testing and more information being able to convert (and an easier convert) from v6/6.5 to 2006 as well as perhaps a few other features being in the game would make me switch to the new version, though I intend to eventually...although I could also wait another year.

I submit, at this point, that there is wisdom with this course of action.

I present the Genesis of the FaceTool mod.

The All-Time Hardball League
A 24 team fictional present day league. Its birth into the OOTP world was 4/22/2001 with v3. We began simming in 2001 and currently we're in the offseason of 2015-16. We have proceeded through v4, v5, and v6.

We use v6.5 currently and have refrained from going to 2006 for reasons of stability and complication without added fun. I think the continued improvement of OOTP has enhanced the league but if the game doesn't improve and reestablish online user friendly approach, the interest will wane.

I meant another calendar year, chances are at this point we'll be converting to 2007 when we do convert.

Late answering the question...

The league is/was Beginner's Luck Baseball League and has undergone many transformations.

It initially started in 1990 using Pursue the Pennant (yep, dice game) until I moved away. We were using the 1988 season. We went through 2 seasons (not full 162 G seasons) over a few real years and then switched to the 1991 season cards. The BLBL season 3 never was completed.

I moved and at that time found a disc for Pursue the Pennant (don't remember the version or year, but the season stats were 2001). We began in 2003 went through 3 seasons. Regardless of where we were in the season it came to halt once the NFL began. Last spring we voted to take the chance and upgrade the league to OOTP and so I pre-ordered.

Everything looked identical in structure so we were hoping to import the old league. That did not go well and the owners voted to begin anew. Most of those that did not agree with scraping the previous 3 seasons left the league. While running the test season we discovered the outrageous number of files that needed to be uploaded to the server. My host was bravenet and their FTP was average 15 sec per 1KB file. A new host was needed to handle these and other requirements. The search took a while but the conversion was made this past summer. We got one season (the test season) in on the new platform and server before the NFL started again.

I decided last month to begin converting the website to a wiki-based site, writing the macros to translate the OOTP files into Wiki-text and so-on and so-forth. Some changes to the league that have been discussed have been implemented, the removal of all owners who have not been active during the previous season and re-learning the programming for the translations have the starting date at risk of a 2-week delay (pushed to March 3).

All that to say, the link is http://blblwiki.racetotheright.com, we are using 2006 and we have many openings. (Oh, and the site is still under construction.)

We are using 2006 but what I want is

1)Accurate rookies, this would save me time from editing entire rookie pools.

2)More online options, mainly posting of game stuff to webpage in newspaper style, I see 2007 is getting there.

3)Cato like program within the game, see 2007 close also.

4)Game manuals less than 10 pages.

5)No new systems, just keep making the game better and I will pay for upgrades.
