Creating a league

Can someone help me out on creating a league?
I would like to know exactly how tough it is to start the web site to maintaining it.
I would like to get one going here and if its something I need a degree for well I guess it wont happen. But if its something that will take work but an intelligent person can do it then im up for it.
I want to create a league thats active but without the ignorance that comes with some leagues out there where you have to question the actions that go behind the scenes.
Enough of that.

It doesn't take a degree OR intelligence. There are a couple commishes on here that are proof enough of that.

I think the most important thing is dedication to the league. Take the time, listen to your owners, that's what's important. However, I see that this is your 1st post.... therefore maybe you should consider starting by joining a league to get used to the environment rather than starting a league right away? Of course, I'm supposing all this based on your post count (a big 1!), I could be wrong...

I actually am in a couple leagues but I want to try running one.
I have fun and everything but I see in leagues out there,there is a lack of communication and if you ask any questions some of these guys hate to answer them.
Im sure you know what im saying.
And the reason why I ask about how hard it is maintaining this is because I dont want to short change anyone.

I have been preparing an online league for approximately two months, simming history, building website, etc. It does take time, in my opinion, to set it up correctly (well as correctly as you can without testing it live.)

Something does bother me however. I have seen a lot of people focus on the amount of posts a person has made to base their opinions on that persons ability/knowledge to run a league. I have but a few posts, BUT have been visiting this board for over a year. I play online in someone elses league, and stay up-to-date on the goings on of the community, but am actually nervous to post the announcement about my league. There are people out here with a large post count that quite frankly I would not participate in their league if you paid me. Posting does NOT equal knowledge. As everyone who comes here knows there are people who post pure drivel.

I am a stronge believer, "that the difference between a wiseman and a fool is that a wiseman listens before he speaks." If this will open me up for attacks so be it, for I will advertise my league once it is done never-the-less

I agree. There are commissioners with hundreds or even over a thousand posts whose leagues I would not have any interest in because I feel their ability as a commissioner could be a reflection of how they act on a message board. Not always, but could be. On the other hand, I do see where people may be hesitant to jump into a league where they don't know much about the Commissioner who set the league up. In two of my current leagues I joined without knowing anything about the Commissioner but through email and or AIM communication and by looking over the product they had put together, it seemed worth joining. No regrets.

Sometimes you have to take a chance on an unknown guy and it can pay off. Still, most GMs times have a very limited amount of time they can devote to OOTP leagues and must choose carefully which may curtail the amount of applicants you, as a relatively unknown Commissioner, may get.

I think I started a thread simular like this.

Patiants. Don't rush your league, or it will fall over. It isnt right to send out a league where you just made your site, get all of the GMs, and then start there. Make sure you have a good base of rules that you like and want in your league. Get a few people that you know that are good GMs in your league. Then, I would come to a board like this to get GMs who you don't have a clue who they are... After thats done, don't start the league then and there. Gather a couple to 4 days to gather yourself, double check that you have every Team filled, and the rosters updated. Patiants will really help the league alot, and it will go more smoother.

Intellengence. You much know what you are getting into. Know your general managers. Get to know them a little bit, before allowing them into your league. Maybe do a background search. Talk to some his/her old commissioners about activacy, and cheating. Make sure y know a good amount of baseball and simulation leagues. I really don't like newcomers. I always start (if I was new to the simulation world) to start with the Triple Play, Madden Leagues. There, you can learn how to be a godo GM, know what trades to do, and make some good decisions.

I don't even pretend to be the expert on this, however, the one thing that helped me get my league going was a dry run. I created a "dummy" online league and ran through all parts of the game (ftp, reports uploading, etc) to make sure I fully understood how they worked. We still had a few problems once the league opened, but they were minor and easily manageable.
