Summer of '49 1950 Awards Announced...

As the league pushes on through 1951, it finally got around to getting awards out to those players who really excelled in 1950...and here are a few of them, starting with the Cy Young Award Winners for 1950:

NATIONAL LEAGUE CY YOUNG
Dizzy Trout
Brooklyn Dodgers

Leo Durocher's Dodgers won 94 games in 1950 on their way to overcoming the juggernaut Indians in the World Series. Owner Jeff Anderson and his manager relied on an explosive offense paced by Duke Snider, Gil Hodges and Roy Campanella to score runs at an NL-leading pace. A brilliant trio of 20-game winners: Preacher Roe (21-7), Rex Barney (21-9) and Dizzy Trout (24-10) made the runs stand up. It was Trout, who came over from Detroit in a 1949 trade, who was the truly the ace of the staff. Alongside his 24-10 record, he posted an ERA of 2.74 while hurling over 322 innings and 18 CG...it is the third time Trout has posted 20 or more wins (1943,44, 50).

AMERICAN LEAGUE CY YOUNG
Gene Bearden
Cleveland Indians

Some things have been givens in the SO49...one of those is that Herb DeSpain's Indians, managed by George "The Bull" Uhle, will come out on top of the American League. It seems the Indians just breed great pitchers, but no pitcher has symbolized the Tribe more than young Gene Bearden. 19-8 in the Indians Pennant season of 1949, he claimed the ace position on the staff as the Indians rolled over the AL again in 1950 with 106 wins on their way to another heart-rending World Series letdown. Bearden posted a brilliant 22-8 record and ERA of 2.65, both AL leading marks. He completed 18 games, tossing 4 shutouts...sadly, after a Hall of Fame start to his career from 1948-1950, Bearden seems to have declined rapidly, a mere shadow of himself early in 1951. Still, in 1950, Gene Bearden was perhaps the best pitcher in baseball.

more to come...

Hmm...all apologies for posting this on the League Openings board! Guess I need to move up to Dynasty Reports which is more appropriate for this kind of stuff...

Sorry guys!

I don't think its any problem posting this sort of stuff here, personally. I love to read it. And I love those player cards of Trout and Bearden! First rate!!
