So, you want to be an owner? (Or a GM, or a coach, or a fan?)
Beta Baseball (see my sig) is looking for 33 more persons. Yes, that may seem unreasonable, but I'm hoping that many people will take the time to join the league. As I've said before (see "my thread" in my sig), the special feature about this league is that you only have a limited to play in the executive decisions, so that means that the league doesn't require as much attention as a normal league, plus it adds a "reality" aspect in my opinion. So far, a number of active members of this board have joined (USBL Commish, crackpott, JWay, Jor31, etc.) and I've also received applications from OOTP "rookies", and I think it's a great mix and really everyone is welcome to join, wether you have experience or not (we do have 50 spots to fill
).So I'll give it a go, we have 17 guys so far, and I hope we can get some more.

Well, I would consider applying as a manager except I haven't been in an online league before (but I've put a lot of time into solo leagues), and I'm sure I would take a lot of heat from the owner / GM for making the wrong decisions. Not to mention I don't have a whole lot of time to spare. Sorry, wish I could help ...

Hey ExposFan,
1) Many of the guys I got so far haven't been in an online league before. 2) Taking heat from GMs and owners: they hire you based on common philosophies... therefore you're not likely to take heat (especially not as a manager) 3) If you don't have a lot of time, well, I can't change that!

So you're hired by the actual GM's in your league... ok, didn't think about that. How are the GMs and managers going to connect initially? Also how much time do you think the manager job would take, and how fast do you plan to sim?

What I was planning on doing is let every exec (owner, coach, gm) write their own philosophy, what they're looking for in a team, that kind of stuff. Then I'd let the owners hire their GMs and coaches. If you absolutely want to be with a particular GM, you can always team up with that person and try to get hired by the same owner.
How much time? Well that depends on how much time you take to do the lineups & depth charts, send them to me and re-assign rosters when needed. Plus, of course, keeping informed about the league. Some like to do their lineups based on ratings, other based on stats... it doesn't take the same amount of time for everybody, so only you can answer that part of the question ![]() As to sims... I was thinking once a week, 2-3 weeks per sim, though that could change anytime, it all depends on what you guys want.

Jean,
I will probably join up, but later today. It's not even 7am, and I'm headed to class. Jebus. I can't believe I used to do this everyday when I was a kid. Peace John |

If I have trouble getting enough people (50
), I can always modify the structure of the league a little bit so that we need less people. We have 19 guys so far, we can always do something interesting, and at the limit I can always act as fans for a certain number of teams if need be.

Sign up Red Blow as a manager.
My managerial style comes from Lefty Grove.... 1. pitching 2. speed 3. defense "The secret of my success was clean living and a fast outfield."-- Lefty Grove (300-141)

well you certainly won't be hired by me.
![]() hitting is below defense and speed? Ugh. Screw small ball, I'm looking for a manager that values pitching, yes, but above all values OBP, and SLG second. Absolute numbers are useless. K's don't matter, speed is a benefit, but not a necessity, and bunts are a waste of an out. In other words, J.P. Ricciardi. Above all, someone who knows OBP is more important than speed at lead off, and someone who realizes your best player goes third, not 4th. I felt like killing Dusty Baker for having Bonds's protection as Santiago instead of Kent. |

I won't be involved with any teams, I'm totally unbiased... but crackpott's strategy makes sense to me (except maybe the Kent thing... it's good to have guys on base when Bonds is up, plus Santiago had a great postseason).

I agree with the OBP and best player batting 3rd.
My philosophy is that if you take a team of guys that can hit at about the league average but that they are (on the whole) fast and sound defensively, then you will have a winner. Look at the last two WS champions. I know I don't need to point something obvious like that out. I am just clarifying what I meant with my 1,2,3. A team full of good-glove, great-speed, no-hit guys will do just that... not hit.
