Solonor's Groovy Computer Baseball League converting to OOTP9!

Yep, the SGCBL is winding up its 15th season and heading into 2018 with the goal of converting to OOTP9.

In case you're not familiar with us, we are the infamous Tolkien Baseball league. Established in 2003, we are one of OOTP's most creative and eclectic online leagues. Just remember: the names may be silly, but the baseball is real!

- League URL: Solonor's Groovy Computer Baseball League
- Special league rules: http://rasreth.com/baseball/SGCBLRules.htm
- Number of teams: 24

We have an unusual mix of male and female participants of all age groups and nationalities. The oldest member is in her 50's. The youngest is a teenager. There are team owners from Australia, France, the UK, the Netherlands and Canada and U.S. states including Hawaii, Michigan, Florida, New York, Nebraska, Ohio, Utah and more.

You can approach any owner in our league to see if they would like a GM to run things for them, too. Currently, there are a few teams that operate this way.

Check out the very active forum for more info: SGCBL Owner Forum :: Index

We currently have the following openings (updated 8/28):

Grey Havens Stars (GM only)
Lake Town Archers (GM only)

I need to read the rest of your rules, but I'm tentatively interested in the Carrock Bears as they seem to have the best minors system of the teams available.

I was wondering if you could answer a few questions though:

-How exactly does the owner/GM relationship work? I understand that the owner has final say, but do the GMs do everything they see fit except the owner can go and change whatever they want? Or is it more that they discuss things first with the owner having final say and then the GM goes out and tries to put the plan in action? And if it's possible somehow, have you considered adding a manager level too? I realize Carrock is a fully open team, I'm just wondering in general (I was eyeing the Grey Havens at first).

-I read a smattering of the posts on your forum and it sounds like you have a great fun gang there. I've read the books (a long long time ago) and I've seen the movies, but I'm afraid I'm not into it that much. I mean, I love your team and player names, but I wouldn't be able to come up with good ones myself. I'm afraid I'm not very funny either. I'm sure I bring a lot of other things to the table like helping others and suggesting improvements, but still, I wonder if I'd fit in. It's alright if you don't think I would.

Thanks for the input.

Mainly, the "GM-only" role was created for teams where the "Owner" really didn't have the time (or sometimes the confidence) to run the team, but they didn't want to let go. As you can tell, we're a fun group, and there are guys (and gals) who just want to take part in the forum or sit back and watch their team without having to run it. However, the AI isn't exactly the best at turning your team into a winner. So, getting human GM to help was the best solution.

I don't know of a single instance where the Owner has overridden anything a GM wants to do. The owner-only types are hands-off, other than an occasional, "Please don't trade my favorite player."

We're all just a bunch of geeks. There are Tolkien geeks and baseball geeks and Dungeons & Dragons geeks and anime geeks and geeks who pretend they're not geeks. Plus, we have a lot of different ages and are from a wide swath of the world (Australia to The Netherlands). So, as long as you don't have a problem with geekery in general or furriners in particular, you'll fit right in.

If Erebor and (perhaps) Carrock aren't available, would you be interested in running Lake Town, Grey Havens, Misty Mountain or Weathertop?

I can guarantee zero interference from the Weathertop owner. Lake Town and Grey Havens are both to the point where they would probably be willing to give up their teams entirely. Misty Mountain's owner pops in occasionally and might offer the most "interference" to a GM.

Not really picky, I just chose Erebor because it was the last one with ownership available (assuming kq took Carrock.)

Wouldn't mind any of the GM jobs.

The former Erebor owner took back his team. I haven't heard from kq on Carrock, yet, but I'm assuming he's still interested in it for now.

So, which one would you like, Carplos: Lake Town, Grey Havens, Misty Mountain or Weathertop?

This is the perfect time to join, as we have just finished the regular season and are getting set to start the playoffs. You still have time to offer extensions to players you want to keep, and you come in before the next big GM function--the Rule 5 Draft.

We haven't switched to OOTP9, yet. That will happen after the playoffs. So, if you want to submit any moves and you don't have OOTP8, then just e-mail me or use one of the forms on http://solonor.com/baseball

Hmm, you've really got me intrigued about this owner/GM thing. It might be a total trainwreck, but it also might be a lot of fun. I think I'll send one of them an email to see if our philosophies mesh. Maybe we can even work together at trying to find opportunities to better the team. I usually have a lot of energy when it comes to the off-season, but searching out good trade possibilities is something I wish I had more interest in so who knows, maybe they'd be into that. I also like this idea of maybe having some constraints that I normally wouldn't have like not being able to trade a guy I'd like to trade. Very interesting.

Good enough for me! I'm sure I must fall under the geeks who pretend not to be geeks category. And I'm Canadian and pro-international myself so we're good there too.

Let me know which one, and I'll help introduce you. Misty Mountain is probably your best bet from the sound of it.

We should have an opening with either Misty Mountain, Weathertop, Grey Havens or Carrock. I'm waiting to hear from two guys mulling over their choices. I'll let you know which two will be available after that.

Acting as commissioner of my own league doesn't allow me the time, but if there were just one league I could join it would be Solonor's. The concept is just so original and compelling! The rules are also well set up (I should know - the SGCBL was one of the leagues I scouted heavily when setting up PEBA).

I may be an outsider, but consider this a vote for the SGCBL - this is a league worth looking into.

I'm the owner of the Dagolad in the SGCBL and have been for some time - I lost count of years because the seasons go more quickly.

This has been a truly fun league to be a part of. I've been in a couple others that went belly up and after having been in this league, it's easy to see why.

While we like to carp about our losses, bemoan the injustices of the program, and grumble over free agency and rule 5 and, of course, the opposite when things are going our way, I do know the other owners in this league are more than willing to help newbies. If you've never joined a league before, this is a good place to start.

I've never been afraid to ask a question, whether it's a baseball related one or an OOTP related one. Often times I get the answer as quick as if I had asked here.

As for Tolkien knowledge, don't sweat it, it'll take care of itself. What's key here is it's a fictional league that I now find as compelling as "real life" MLB. I also find that better as well because I don't get messed up watching the MLB on TV. I've yet to see a Took or Firball show up on FOX.

So, if you're waffling, quit. Pour syrup on the waffle and come join the league (just remember the waffle... they're scrumptious).

edited cuz I can't spel

I'm not in the league either, but I know that Solonor is a good guy and is quite knowledgable about OOTP. I'm sure that you can't go wrong with playing in his league.

I would be like to be a part of this league. I got OOTP 9 up and running. I have played numerous sims and have a firm understanding of what is going on. Been following baseball really close for a long, long time. I am dependable and can even contribute in a variety of ways if needed. Got any questions, get at me through email or AIM.
