newbie - be gentle

i am looking for a kind-hearted, patient lad that can help me get off on the right foot with my OOTP5 future.

what i am looking for:
probably just a couple of e-mails. i think that i am close to having my league set up correctly, but it just quite isn't there. i have hit a roadblock. admittedly, it is due to my lack of knowledge on internet protocol.

if you have a moment to spare in helping out a fellow baseball sim brother, it would be much appreciated. i might even be willing to kick in a 1979 brian asselstine baseball card.

thanks

j

Q: you can be a standup netizen and help out a fella in need. what do you do?

A) completely ignore the guy and pull it back a tad
B) attempt to be witty in front of your mates

p.s. - the documentation on this matter is PATHETIC. seriously. most of you guys have been doing this sim for some time by the looks of it. it is old hat to you. if you want a good laugh, check out what is offered up on this. nada.
for the record, i went back through all nine pages in this topic to see if there was some post in the past that addresses my concern. obviously there was none.

if you do a search on this board, there is a thread on here that talks about being a successful GM, and there is countless threads that talks about being a good commissioner for an online league. Otherwise, If you would send me a PM, we can talk...

thanks, ben.

i have run my own league in FPS Baseball Pro for the past five years. we have just decided to make a switch, and OOTP5 looks like it will do the job just fine. there was no option in FPS to run a league on the internet, so i would just zip up the results and send them off - either as a zip of the htmls or a backup of the entire league files. i am telling you this so you can see where i am coming from and my lack of web site experience. my service (earthlink) provides me with 10MB of web space, but i had never used it. i figured out to get there and do a little bit.

here is my problem:

OOTP5 asks for several things:
1. FTP SERVER ADDRESS
2. LOCAL STARTING DIRECTORY
3. PORT

for the FTP SERVER ADDRESS i put in "ftp-www.earthlink.net". that seems to work. i have my concerns about this nonetheless, since it doesn't tie in directly with *my* home page, and is a general information thing.
the PORT i have left alone at "21". i really don't get this just yet. that was recommended apparently.
the LOCAL STARTING DIRECTORY is where i think i have having my issues. to me, *local* means someplace on my drive, but this is obviously wrong. my next hunch was in thinking that maybe this was where i needed to put my personal web page info. i tried it a number of ways, but to no avail. it looks like it is looking for a folder.

that is where i am now. pressing "TEST CONNECTION" brings up "setting up connection" and then "could not find directory on server".

any help at all on this would be much appreciated. ben - drop me a personal line and i will give you a baseball scoop, if you like. thanks.

You don't need to use the FTP. I myself have the GMs send the EXP file. Thats a export file that the team use to submit lineup/rotation changes. I mean you can use FTP or e-mail, its all the same. But for uploading web pages you'll need to either use the in game FTP set up or your manual one (as I do). As far as finding out the FTP connection data, thats pretty easy. If you currently run a web site, how do you upload everything? I would assume via FTP95_WE. If so, that has all the information needed in the connect window. If not, consult your web space host, they will tell you the requested information.

Best,
Chris

For my league, the settings are:

FTP Server Address: www.myserver.com
Local Starting DIR: /web/ftp/
Port: 21

What they're asking for is the directory on the server you want the exports routed to, and where you will import the exports from. Within my own domain, "/web/" is where all of my league's web-site htm files are stored, and within that directory on the server, I created a sub-directory called FTP, specifically for OOTP exporting/importing. I am not all that versed on the vernacular of internet applications and storage, so I hope this made sense and is helpful for you. If I am way off base on any of this, someone please correct me so we can help this guy out.

silvernblack summed up connection/ftp issues pretty well.

You may need more web space eventually as the league files with logs, box scores, ect, can start to get pretty big after a while even zipped.

I recommend talking to the .400 guys to see if you can get your league on their server. Things become dead easy at that point. You will need 12 product IDs from your GM however.

www.simleagues.com . Great service, low prices. Mention TN when making your purchase

if your looking for your own domain, powweb seems to be the best out there by what everyone is saying. Only 7.77 a month can get you alot

Driver is right. What you need to do is create a folder on your website, and call it something like "exports". Then for local starting directory, put "/exports", and it will grab all the exports from that folder, and bring them into your game. Hope that answers your question.

thanks, one and all. here is where it stands currently, and i think that i might be close. first off:

silvernblack: my web host is earthlink. apparently, they have a very dummy way of posting things. it is something they call "click 'n build". this means that i do not have any sort of software that i am using to post anything with. there are ways to attach files and create additional pages and junk like that. i'm sure that it is pretty darn basic. regarding the sending of rosters via e-mail, that is obviously one way to go, but i am hoping to get away from that.

driver 8: on my site, i created a sub-folder that i called "trial league". instrad of it looking like a subfolder called "trial league", it actually created a subfolder called /_wsn/page2.html (the folder would be "_wsn", i assume). in the OOTP "LOCAL STARTING DIR" i have attemted all of the following:
home.earthlink.net
home.earthlink.net/~yajeflow
home.earthlink.net/~yajeflow/_wsn
~yajeflow
~yajeflow/_wsn
_wsn
http:/home.earthlink.net/blah blah blah and whatever....
nothing has worked yet.

ben music: more space? i'm sure that you are right. i'm pretty sure that i will go that way, but i would still like to see how this will all work regarding the game itself. i have some questions that i would like to find answers for (for example - how does a GM transact a trade for a player on a computer GM team when another owner could put in a trade for that very same player?)

nirvana: www.simleagues.com sounds like a great option. if i can figure out the basics, i believe that mkight be the way that i go.

SimSportsWorld: gotcha. my web site has a link for my folder called "trial league", but it renamed the folder to "_wsn". i'm not sure why, and i guess it doesn't matter just yet, as i can't get OOTP to see it.

believe it or not, guys - i am rarely an idiot. i have unfortunately maintained ny ignorance of the workings of web site stuff thus far, and it looks like it has cost me. i figured this stuff would all be pretty self-explanatory. heck, it probably is, but i am still having fits. thank you all again for your patience.

Honestly, you're doing much better than I did in the beginning. Heck, I still have fits with some aspects of the web.

by the way, for the most part i have found OOTP5 to be pretty intriguing. i think that it will work fins for my league. the financial model is fairly sound, and we have definitely been lacking that aspect by using FPS Baseball. contract figures seem reasonable (and this is coming from a guy who deals in baseball contracts for a living). the bells and whistles are all very nice. maybe not quite Championship Mananger level, but still a nice effort. I am a whore for statistical realism, and the results that i have had so far are very encouraging in this respect. the tinkering around is not entirely precise, but at least it is an option. the only real issue i have with the game (and it is a major flaw) is the trading AI from the computer GMs. it is hard NOT to win or be competitive every season because of this. the silly thing about is that the offers that are submitted to you by them are 100% worthless. there is no chance that i would've accepted any single deal thus far. yet, when you ask for an offer for a guy that you wish to deal, you get gold. sure, they are contract moves for the teams involved, but they still make major mistakes. the interface for trading is also not done well at all. in addition to having to change your team for a computer team on the trading screen, it seems very odd that if you look for a certain type of player on a filter, you can't immediately add that guy to a trade offer. instead, you have to remember his name and team and go find him again to add him to a trade offer. unwieldy. did i spell that correctly? how about cumbersome instead. keep in mind that i am not slamming the game. i still am very enthused. obviously this is so, or i wouldn't be wasting my time trying to get it all up and running. i have seen the age thing happen, too. that doesn't really bug me. maybe the precipice is a bit too steep after age 36, but it is still a part of the game. maybe a bit more randomization on that front is warranted.

another thing that i have noticed is that guaging the minors for success in the bigs is a tough chore. if "10" equals the major league competitive level, and "1" equals single A, then double A is about a "2" and triple A is about a "4". there is a HUGE gap between the majors and triple A, in my opinion.

by the way, if you want to send in your membership dues to the "Dave 'Tumbleweed' Valles Fan Club", go right ahead. the kis is 152-52 with a 2.56 ERA and almost 2,800 whiffs at the age of 32 for richmond right now. he struck out 408 in his rookie year to set the all-time record. as i said - realism is a important thing to me. this is entirely possible, so i have no problem with it.
