After a long wait, the front page is finally up. Thanks to everyone who stuck with me! Still needs a little tweaking. There are still a few links that may not work. The At a Glance League Leader board will go up as soon as the season starts (you can already switch between the stat layers).
Also, I plan on constructing the team pages sometime around the league start date. The beat writer email links aren't functioning yet, but will be very soon The movie hasn't been fixed yet, but that will come soon as well. Finally, the rules have been tweaked a little too. There's still a little time to get into the league, but spots are filling very quickly. Of course, we're always looking for division writers as well as someone to cover the minor league beat. It will be a lot of extra work for the commish keeping track of 40-man rosters and waiver eligibility, and this is probably why such a complex system has not been tried to my knowledge. Even though the addition of the legends intrigues me, I would love to see how your system would work in a straight forward league (especially a fictional universe, which is my favorite type of system). If I had enough time, I would volunteer for a beat writer position, but my hands are quite full already. I just wanted to compliment you for your truly original league and wish you good luck, I'll probably have my eye on how it goes. [ February 18, 2002: Message edited by: Hammer755 ]

Well,
The site is still up. We may be switching to a new server, but the web address should remain the same even if we do. [ February 19, 2002: Message edited by: sporr ]
|

Shane, I'll be happy to take the Jays if Carter is replaced by Alomar... if I have to argue why, I'll be happy to, but as a lifelong Jays fan, it breaks my heart to see Joe immortalized as our best player when he had one huge hit... and alomar kicked his ass otherwise at everything.
You're league looks pretty sweet...

Even better, give me the Blue Jays with Otto Velez as the franchise player! No way the Jays would have won 54 games in 1977 without him!
Toronto is a tough one for picking a franchise player for this type of situation since the players that own spots on the Jays all-time leaders lists (Steib, Whitt, Bell, Tony Fernandez, Lloyd Moseby) pale in comparison to the legends from other franchises.

that's true.
I'd be in the league no matter what... it looks cool. If you'd give me the Jays, Shane, just contact me at crackpott@rogers.com... if it needs to be a retired player (or close) though, I think Steib, Bell, McGriff all have better cases.

How about using a great Canadian player such as Larry Walker for Toronto? Similar to Roger Clemens pitching for Texas. Just a thought.

Walker isn't all that close to retirement though. But, how about Jenkins...not a bad pitcher back in his day?
Hmmm...it would be pretty tough to pick one player who really dominated while he was a Jay. For the Expos...oddly enough...it's a little easier. You've got Raines...Carter...and Dawson who were all great players for several years. But, with the Jays...it's a little less obvious...Bell had a couple of good seasons and so did Barfield...but nobody really stands out for several years. Hmmmm... Johnny

(Roger Clemens in his brief stint as a Jay does not count, and even if he did, I would still pick Alomar). In terms of Alomar vs. Carter -- add on the fact that Joe Carter is, by all accounts, a class A jerk -- it really is no contest.

Alomar is great but there IS a HOFer that played for Toronto- Dave Winfield. I'd put him in over Joe Carter, hands down.

Hey guys, thanks for the response to what became a big question for both spoor and myself. There were teams that have had such short lives it was difficult for them to produce a star player. The token example being Texas. The others were Montreal, Toronto, Anaheim, Seattle, and the White Sox. White sox not so short, but quality is limited. The reason for choosing Roger Clemens for Texas was because all of the famous players for Texas are playing now, thus eliminating them. So we sought out a list of players from Texas and we decided that we should end Clemens career early, he was clearly the best. Now for Toronto--clearly a town that needed someone to stay for a while. Some players are legends in Toronto but not good enough for us. George Bell, Lloyd Mosbey, and McGriff. We both had issues with McGriff he was dropped early. So what were we left with, Joe Carter and Roberto Alomar. It cant be Alomar because he still has plenty of career in him now and the fact that we considered Carter more known for Toronto than Alomar. That left us with Mr. Carter. He is someone that everyone knows and someone that has legendary status in MLB. 1993-Game 7-winning homerun off of Mitch Williams. That is something that every baseball fan on earth wants to see happen in the world series for their team of course. So basically Joe Carter got it because he has the stature and is retired.
Dave Winfield didnt get a shot because he is known more for the Padres and Yankees and he didnt really play there long enough. If we werent allowing jerks into the league then Ty Cobb would still be pushin up daisies. Thanks for the questioning of one of our rulings. We are eager to answer more.

Thanks everyone!
We're down to two openings. Looks like the league will be full well before draft day. If anyone has interest, drop me a line. Once we fill up, we'll start the waiting list so we can make replacements as needed quickly. Beat writer positions are still available for those who don't make it in time to own a team. Also, we have a few surprises in the works. Hopefully, we can pull them off. |
