The AI will put a position player in to pitch if necessary. It happened twice to one of the owners in my online league last season. He was only keeping a 5-man bullpen, and both times the game went into several extra innings -- in one of those games the starter had gotten injured very early.
In fact, I think the AI put the position player in despite there being at least one starter who could have pitched. If I recall correctly, he lost both games. One time the position player got smacked around; the other time he actually threw about 5 innings, walking a bunch but only giving up a couple of hits, until he finally gave up the winning run.

I started a thread about this and other bullpen AI problems in the feedback forum. Hopefully the new game engine in version 6 will fix this problem.

Haha. I didn't know. I knew that you couldnt use a pitcher as a pinch hitter (without changing his position) so I had just assumed a position player can't pitch.
I had Milton Bradley pitch an inning and it was tons of fun. He inherited a runner on first who stole second. Then he got a flyout and then another flyout with the runner being doubled off. He was tired after one pitch ![]() EDIT: Then when the pitchers spot came up, he hit for himself and got a HR.
