Salary cap or no salary cap

I'm trying to decide if I want a cap, or if I want to retain as much realism as possible and not have a cap.

Is there anything I should be aware of in an online league if I didn't have a cap?

i like not having a cap, but it really doesnt matter. its just about personal preference really. if you are starting a league i would certainly be interested in taking over the pirates, also.

I run my league without a cap, and of my other leagues one has a cap, one has financials off, so I've seen all sides.

I personally don't like salary caps as a matter of principle, which is why I decided not to use one. I retain the right as a commissioner to adjust or cancel any deals that are clearly out of the realm of possibility, like offering a player $30 mil a year. It helps if you have owners you can trust, of course. I've never had to cancel a deal (free agency or trade) for financial reasons in a year of the league's existence.

The cap introduces a bit more strategy, and it makes trade talks more complex (but fun, trying to put together salaries that can get a deal done).

The main reason that I have never liked salary caps is that it always seems like there are teams that earn great amounts of cash and have nothing that they can do with it. As a strategy, you can sign players to long term deals knowing that if they crap out you can always cut them and absorb the expense.

What I do is looking how much money leaves the league each season (player expenses) and how much comes into the league (attendance, playoffs, rewards, tv and merchandising)...

I see if there is a big difference, and how the spread (variance) is....

If necessary, I alter the tv revenue (same for all teams). Merchandising revenue is set, and dependent on real life markte size. In this way I can control how much money is coming into the league.

We never had the need for a cap. We have 5* players becoming FAs because teams cannot afford them...
