Online League File Question...
I am attempting to set up a fictional league. I have the site set up, all the rules finished, message boards, etc.
The problem is, I simmed from 1900 to 2004 to generate a nice league history, and now the league file is frickin' huge. After I zip it, it still comes out to over 28 MB. I assume it's because of all the history. 28 MB is alot to d/l, especially for those on slower connections. The biggest league file in any of the league's I'm currently in now is about 12 MB(and the others are about 4 MB). Plus, I'm sure it'd be hell on my server to upload a 30 MB file, and have 30 people download that file three times a week. So I want to figure out what files I actually NEED to upload for GMs to be able to manage their teams. I figure it's best to ask you guys since you have more experience running online leagues than me...can anyone help? |

I imagine you are not including the Almanac, you can archive (move somewhere else for future ref) it. How big is your Players.dat? If that's huge, you've got a problem (but someone might have a solution for that). You can also safely archive the messages folder and all the htmls in the league_news_box. Many of your other txt files are going to be relatively huge too and you could archive them as well and have them regenerate fresh (I can't say for certain they will, but I think they all do), but you might want to keep them so their history can be read in the game.

Well after screwing around with it, I got the players.dat file down to only 3 MB after compressing.
League News Box and retired.dat aren't needed, correct? If so, I think I have it figured out. I should have known better than to mess with this right after waking up, lol. |
